I saw WTROE at a theatre in the films very limited distribution. Gavin.
The documentary begins by telling us that the history of the Branch Davidians
go's back about fifty years. David Koresh became the leader in the early
eighties. We get to know Koresh and the other members through video taped
interviews which were made using a video camera that was given to them by the
FBI. The tape was suppressed for a long time because the FBI feared it showed
then in a totally different perspective than what the FBI wanted the public
to see. These people came across as quiet, unassuming and courteous. The only
difference was that they had different religious beliefs than the majority of
people.
The local sherriff said he had met them on numerous occasions and found them
to be polite and friendly but never overbearing. He said he liked them, they
never caused any trouble. The sherrif said if he wanted to talk to them he
went up to the shack and knocked on the door, no need for ninja suited
nutters. Koresh comes across as somebody driven and passionate about his
beliefs, someone who is convinced he is a messenger for God. He certainly did
not come across as an insane cult leader bent on going out in a blaze of
glory.
On the fateful morning the BATF called the media 30 minutes before the raid
was to begin. When the Congressional committee asked the
female agent if the call was made in order to get some good PR for the BATF
for the upcoming appropriations, she denied that this was the reason. I
cannot remember the reason she gave, but later on when the raid went sour it
turned out that the BATF's command post was very well set up with computers
and fax machines etc in order to facillitate the PR coup, but their agents
who were directly involved didn't have any means of communicating back to
base in order to call an ambulance; they had to ask someone from the media to
call an ambulance for them! An ex-member of Delta Force called it the
"Oh Shit" plan.
The BATF sent three helicopters circling around the rear of the buildings in
order to "divert attention" away from the men walking up to the front door.
Considering this was meant to be a simple "knock warrant", the amount of
histrionics associated with it led me to conclude that this was all part of
the "show." Suddenly all hell breaks loose; but who shot first? A lawyer for
the Davidians said he saw the metal door with holes obviously punched in from
the outside. When the audience heard that the door had gone "missing" and the
video tape was "blank", there was a collective sigh of disbelief. Meanwhile
other ATF agents had climbed onto one of the roofs and were firing
indiscrimintaley through a window. Then we start hearing the taped 911 call
from a Davidian inside the building screaming at the operator to call it off,
call it off, there are women and children in here, we have to protect
ourselves. The ATF asked for a cease fire only because they had run out of
ammunition and had sustained casualties.
Then we see one of the helicopters circling around and in the distance a
young boy was climbing on top of a silo, he wasn't shooting or even armed as
far as we could see. Someone in the helicopter shot him dead. They wouldn't
allow the Davidians to get his body for five days.
The FBI was caught in another blatent lie when one of the negotiators was
talking with someone in the building and the Davidian was accusing the FBI of
shooting at them from the helicopter. The negotiator at first denied this but
when pressed and was told that everyone was listening the agent hesitated and
then did an about turn and said he was just saying that they didn't have
mounted machine guns on the helicopters.
The allegation that the davidians were "stockpiling" weapons was shown in a
totally different perspective when the author of a book on Waco said that
there were thousands of legal gun dealers and traders who bought and sold
guns in Texas but their stockpiles were called "inventory's." Koresh was
buying and selling guns and was illegally changing some to fully automatic;
this is considered a minor offense in Texas.
There were some very perceptive comments from Koresh and other Davidian
members about their rights as free Americans to lead whatever lives they
liked as long as it was lawfull. The foreign members were shocked and
discusted at the governments murderous tactics which were totally
unnecessary.
We heard testimony from a 14 year old girl who said that Koresh had sexually
assaulted her. Later we found out that she had changed her testimony twice so
we didn't know what to believe. Two lawyers said that they hadn't seen
anything to make them suspect that Koresh was sexually abusing children, but
who knows?
When the tanks moved in and started driving around the front, crushing cars
and purposely driving over a buried Branch Davidian, again and again,
obviously trying to provoke the Davidians instead of diffusing the situation.
In one of the transcripts a Davidian complains to the negotiator about the
agents "mooning" them, and what type of people were these when there were
young children inside. His answer was, well , the type of guys who have
dreamt for years about driving around in a tank in this kind of situation,
they are a certain breed, or words to that effect. These agents came across
as the worst kind of pumped up, adrenalin for brains, macho morons out on a
killing spree; gutless cowards whose idea of heroism is gassing and shooting
women and children. They wear a badge and murder in the name of the law. You
can envisage them very well afterwards retelling their "war stories," patting
each other on the back and swilling beer as they pump out their chests and
argue amongst themselves about how many kills each of them got.
Congratulations boys, you did a bang up job of slaughtering some 80 human
beings, here's a medal. Didn't anybody stop for one second and think about
what they were doing, didn't anybody have a conscience? Or was it simply mob
rule.
Pond scum Janet Reno left the FBI to it's own devices as she slithered off to
give some inane speech. In the final assault we saw tanks spraying massive
amounts of CS gas into many parts of the building. In these quantities CS gas
will kill you. It ia also highly flammable. One tank purposely went into the
last sanctuary for the women and children, a metal bunker, and sprayed gas
into it, probably killing everyone. The FLIR footage shows machine
gun fire from two locations behind the only exit from the burning building.
The 27 or so bullet ridden bodies found in this area were said to be "self
inflicted wounds." The FLIR also shows other occassions when agents opened
fire totally unprovoked.
When one of the lawyers brought Koresh's grandmother to the siege in order to
try and get her access to Koresh and help bring an end to it this request was
refused. The lawyer said when he turned his back on the agents he heard one
of them say, "I hope you said goodbye", at another time in the documentary
one of the agents said he hoped they had "fire insurance."
My conclusion is that the whole affair would of been handled about as well if
the Ku Klux Klan were running things. The FBI and ATF were completely
unprofessional and incompetant to say the least, they were the equivalent of
a bunch of schizophrenic attack dogs set loose amongst a herd of
sheep;remorseless killers who were bent on revenge.
I can dare say that the other two dozen or so people in the theatre felt the
same way. It was all totally unnecessary. Gavin.
