I know it's August and the only news is possible hurricanes, but the
potential Warren Beatty candidacy for President was a front-page story in the
August 29 Washington Post.
According to the article, the idea originated at a Los Angeles dinner party
given by conservative columnist Arianna Huffington for Ted Halstead, who
wrote a recent Atlantic Monthly article on how Generation Xers are opting out
of political and civic involvement. Beatty and his wife, actress Annette
Bening, were among the attendees, and Bening suggested that Halstead enter
politics. Halstead responded that the one with the interest and the verve
was Beatty, and that topic dominated the conversation for the rest of the
evening.
Huffington is actively promoting a Beatty candidacy, for reasons that aren't
at all clear. And Bening seems to have warmed to the idea. A platform is
developing, with campaign finance reform the centerpiece.
Apparently the focus is on a run for the Democratic Party nomination, not an
independent candidacy.
It sounds crazy, but after Jesse Ventura got elected Governor few people are
willing to dismiss it out of hand.

GOP intrudes on Clintons' New York vacation
SKANEATELES, NY. (AP) - President Clinton and the first lady came in for a
little needling Tuesday during their vacation at the Finger Lakes when the
Republican National Committee began airing a commercial touting the GOP's tax
cut plan. The Clintons didn't let the political back-and-forth interrupt
their fun in the sun. The president played golf with Democratic fund-raiser
Terence McAuliffe, who hails from Syracuse, and a few local political and
business leaders.

Tax bill-veto game following script
WASHINGTON (AP) - After a month of previews, The Veto is coming soon. The
Republicans will be sending their tax bill to the White House, President
Clinton will veto it, and they'll replay the arguments they've been sounding
all summer. Clinton says he'd be willing to talk but not about anything close
to the $792 billion, 10-year tax cut Congress narrowly approved before its
summer recess. GOP leaders held the tax bill at the Capitol rather than send
it to the White House, to be vetoed while they were out of town until Labor
Day and the president held the stage alone. Clinton says he'll bargain on tax
cuts, but not until Congress deals with the spending he considers vital,
including Medicare.

Bradley criticizes Clinton on Russia
WASHINGTON (AP) - Democratic presidential candidate Bill Bradley added his
voice Tuesday to the political chorus criticizing the Clinton
administration's Russia policy in light of the Russian money-laundering
scandal. Federal authorities are investigating whether Russian gangsters,
some with ties to the U.S.-supported government of President Boris Yeltsin,
funneled international loans and other foreign aid through the Bank of New
York. Gore aides have had little comment, except to emphasize that the vice
president has a consistent record of pressing Russia to crack down on
corruption and implement economic reforms as a condition of continued aid.

Nervous Democrats spurn Gore's push for early endorsements
WASHINGTON (AP) - Nervous House freshman and other Democratic activists with
the most to lose in the 2000 elections have spurned Vice President Al Gore's
appeals for early support. The message to rival Bill Bradley: Forget it. The
nomination's mine. The count so far - 69 of the 256 Democrats in the House
and Senate, according to the Gore campaign's public list of endorsements -
suggests Gore's ascension is not the lawmakers' highest priority. Bradley has
three Hill endorsements - Nebraska Sen. Bob Kerrey, Minnesota Sen. Paul
Wellstone and Illinois Rep. William Lipinski - plus 130 state
representatives.

Forbes running ads criticizing Gore on Russia policy
WASHINGTON (AP) - Republican presidential hopeful Steve Forbes has started
airing a radio commercial that criticizes Vice President Al Gore's role in
U.S.-Russia relations and demands an apology for sending U.S. aid to Russia.
The spot debuting Monday also says ``Vice President Gore and Treasury
Secretary Lawrence Summers owe the American taxpayer an apology'' for foreign
aid sent to Russia.

It is running this week in the upstate New York area where President Clinton
is vacationing with his wife, Hillary Rodham Clinton, and their daughter,
Chelsea. http://www.capitolwatch.com/story/09_01story12.htmlBush hit with
free speech lawsuit, spared from subpoena in second caseAUSTIN, Texas (AP) -
Gov. George W. Bush won a victory in one lawsuit even as he found himself the
target of another. A judge on Monday dismissed a subpoena that sought Bush's
testimony in a whistleblower lawsuit filed by the fired head of the Texas
Funeral Service Commission, Eliza May. Meanwhile, Bush was named in a lawsuit
Monday accusing him of violating the free speech rights of environmental
protestors at the governor's mansion. The environmentalists allege that Bush
has given state troopers ``unbridled discretion'' to target protesters
picketing in front of the mansion on a public sidewalk.
http://www.capitolwatch.com/story/09_01story3.htmlBush camp has raised about
$50 million, on track for $60 millionDALLAS (AP) - Fund raising for Texas
Gov. George W. Bush's presidential race is poised to top $50 million and
continue its record-breaking pace, according to a published review of
contributions and interviews with his campaign associates. Recent weeks of
campaigning and a series of out-of-state fund-raisers have added to Bush's
war chest, which had already dwarfed the Republican field with $37 million
through June 30. Now, the campaign will soon exceed $50 million from more
than 108,000 contributors, the newspaper said.
http://www.capitolwatch.com/story/09_01story4.htmlDevelopment officials
displeased at speech from Sen. Orrin HatchKEOKUK, Iowa (AP) - An address from
Republican presidential hopeful Orrin Hatch was a surprise - and not a
welcome one - to the organizers of a meeting of area economic development
officials from Iowa, Illinois and Missouri. The 70 participants were holding
a brainstorming session on ways to develop and market value-added
agricultural products from the region when Hatch showed up. The Utah senator
spoke to the group for about 30 minutes, emphasizing the need to appoint
conservative federal
judges.http://www.capitolwatch.com/story/09_01story5.htmlCan McCain live up
to reputation? LANCASTER, N.H. (AP) - John McCain considers himself a
blunt-speaking, pull-no-punches political maverick, but he is discovering
aboard his ``Straight Talk Express'' campaign bus that he may have difficulty
living up to his reputation. The Republican presidential candidate stands
accused of waffling on abortion to court moderate voters. He called the
congressional tax-cut plan an ``exercise in political kabuki,'' criticizing
GOP leaders for a bill that gives immediate tax cuts to special interests and
delays reductions to taxpayers. But on abortion, McCain has shown that he's
not above hedging his bets.
http://www.capitolwatch.com/story/09_01story6.htmlWorkers fighting back
against English-only policies on the jobCHICAGO (AP) - Carlos Solero couldn't
believe his ears when his bosses started reprimanding him for speaking
Spanish on the job. Eventually, Solero was asked to sign a work agreement
that included the policy - but refused. Now he and seven other
Spanish-speakers - and the federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission -
have filed lawsuits against Watlow Batavia, a metal-casting and assembly
plant in Batavia, Ill. Legal experts say it's part of a growing movement
against employers who try to force workers to speak English on the job.
http://www.capitolwatch.com/story/09_01story7.htmlAppeals court agrees term
limits unconstitutionalST. LOUIS (AP) - A voter-approved ``scarlet letter''
for Missouri politicians refusing to support term limits took another hit
Tuesday. A three-judge panel of the 8th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals
affirmed a district court ruling that ballot labeling of term limits
opponents was unconstitutional. In November 1996, 58 percent of Missouri
voters approved a plan requiring congressional candidates to declare their
stands on limits. The proposal would have identified term limits opponents by
special language on election ballots.
http://www.capitolwatch.com/story/09_01story8.htmlSheriff offers politicians
commissions to pack heat SPOKANE (AP) - Sheriff Mark Sterk is offering
commissions to elected officials so they can carry concealed weapons in the
Spokane County Courthouse. His own experience with a stalker who followed him
home from the courthouse convinced him how vulnerable elected officials can
be, Sterk, a Republican, said in extending the offer Monday. The commissions
would allow the elected officials to carry concealed weapons past metal
detectors at entrances to the Spokane County Courthouse and Public Safety
Building. There is no law or county policy prohibiting county employees from
carrying concealed weapons to
work.http://www.capitolwatch.com/story/09_01story9.htmlAP content Copyright
