The consensus of historians is that Hitler *did* write it himself; the ideas in it are entirely his. The standard English translation was made during WW2 by a committee of translators and scholars led by the great Ralph Manheim, who wrote the introduction. The thing you always have to remember in reading *Mein Kampf* is that Hitler's basic sociopolitical education was on the streets of turn-of-the-century Vienna, in the most viciously anti-Semitic milieu imaginable. Vienna was always governed by the Socialists; and the Socialists were strongly anti-Semitic, as well as anti-Slavic. (This is still true of Austrian politics today. Twenty-five years ago, Dick Cavett interviewed the actor Walter Slezak, who grew up in Vienna and Berlin in the '20s and '30s, and asked him what the difference was between Germans and Austrians. Slezak replied bluntly, "The Germans *were* Nazis. The Austrians still are.") Anything Hitler says in the book about Jews in Vienna has to be taken with a VERY large amount of salt. Sure, he may have believed it; some of it may even have been true; but winnowing the wheat from the chaff in *Mein Kampf* is impossible. What always strikes me most about the book is its fierce logic, probably a remnant of Hitler's Catholic upbringing. The first time I read it, I got about two-thirds of the way through it, and found myself nodding in agreement...at which point I slammed the book shut and told myself firmly, "No! You do NOT agree with this book! This is an abomination!" Hitler's logic is supremely seductive, but it is the same seductiveness the serpent used in Eden.
