Two years later, this aristocratic daughter of a rural English baron became Winston Churchill's daughter-in-law. In the fifties, single again, Pamela developed an expertise in eighteenth-century French furniture, which provided a nice bookend to her other talent: being romantically involved with high-profile men. Her second marriage, to Broadway agent-producer Leland Hayward (who was also the third Mr. Margaret Sullavan), prompted her to say, "Theatre and politics are alike . . . they're both made up of triumphs and disasters." She married a third time, to businessman-politician W. Averell Harriman (whose personal fortune Pamela dipped into to shepherd the Democratic Party through the perilous Reagan years). Considering her list of equally, if not more, powerful lovers (Joseph Kennedy, Edward R. Murrow, Aristotle Onassis, William Paley), many people raised at least one eyebrow when President Clinton appointed her U.S. Ambassador to France. But after all, if the French aren't going to understand and forgive sexual peccadilloes, then who on earth will? Her qualifications for the job?
