-Caveat Lector-

OK, your position is much clearer now and is one with which I can
sympathize. I, too, do not wish to see the Timorese substitute one set of
crony capitalists for another. However, we have to be careful that such
concerns don't leave us sitting on our hands when people are being murdered
and forcefully repatriated en masse. I hate to say it, but in a case like
this I'd rather see a multinational force on the ground to stop the killing
first. Next, we can continue to wage our campaigns against the IMF (and I
know that's a highly idealistic notion).

Timor once again reminds us that capital is infinitely flexible, finding in
any situation a means to fulfill its own ambitions, manipulating even
resistance to its machinations into a manageable, profitable enterprise. We
are at a most frustrating and depressing point in history when freedom is
measured only in terms of one's ability to become a consumer, when national
liberation becomes a means of multinational enslavement, when our finest
hopes and dreams are undermined by powers beyond our reach. What is to be
done, indeed.

Cheers,

Lucio
