-Caveat Lector-
A friend is wondering whatever happened to the school he attended in
1968-69 -- Monteith College, on the Wayne State University campus outside
Detroit.
He tells me that in the '60s, Ford Motor Co. decided to create a "think
tank" rivalling Rand but funded and controlled by Ford alone, and Monteith's
students --attending "by invitation only"-- constituted the "nursery" for
that future project. A radical bunch they were, I'm told -- a mix of
Berkeley-style activists and acidhead hippies, encouraged to be brilliant,
innovative and self-determining, yet groomed by the school's administrators
for some future position in politics. They were taken on a "field trip," for
example, to the 1968 Pentagon protest, just to "observe" and learn about mass
behavior "in the wild."
When "Monteith" was listed on my friend's application to another
university much later, a search for official transcripts turned up a blind
alley -- by then, Monteith college had been "shut down" (under peculiar
circumstances, apparently) and no records of student attendance existed
anymore. Yet a Wayne State U. official passed back the word, "Whatever he's
claiming, take him at his word, and give him full credit for it."
What accounted for Monteith's shut-down? Political pressure? Bad
investment?
He also wonders, whatever happened to the "think tank" once projected by
Ford?
