Drivers may have to show their licence on demand

MOTORISTS may have to produce their driving licences to the police on
demand - the
first peacetime requirement on Britons to carry identification
documents.
A report from a Government action team says the case for compulsory
carrying of
driving documents is yet to be made. However, it says the police are
pressing strongly
for powers to check the new photo-licences at the roadside. The action
team says
compelling motorists to carry driving licences should be reconsidered
once technology
for transmitting photographs to terminals in police cars is fully
tested. "This benefit
would be enhanced if paper driving licences were recalled and replaced
with the
photocard licences," says the report. Mr Straw said he was keeping the
option open.
