Ah, correct me if I am wrong...60 ml is 96 km
or 85 km is is 53 ml..
How the hell can it be a mistake from converting imperial to metric..
..."likely" reason..
And the two different teams of engineers must have been from different
countries.,,
How can they admit to such stupidity?....How is it that we can accept it?

WHY MARS ORBITER WAS LOST
NASA announced Thursday September 30th the likely reason the Mars
Climate Orbiter was lost. On September 23rd, the spacecraft apparently
passed only 60 km from the Martian surface, rather than the planned
close approach of 140 to 150 km. Engineers consider 85 km the minimum
safe altitude for a flyby. A preliminary investigation revealed that a
mismatch of figures occurred because one team of engineers had used
English units of measure while another used metric. Edward Weiler,
NASA's Associate Administrator for Space Science, explained, "People
sometimes make errors. The problem here was not the error, it was the
failure of NASA's systems engineering, and the checks and balances in
our processes to detect the error. That's why we lost the spacecraft."
Two panels continue to study the mission failure. The next mission in
queue for the red planet is Mars Polar Lander, which arrives December
3rd.
