As with all of Seeker1's writings, there is enough meat here to chew on for
quite a while. But one curious item leaps out at me, because it relates to
something I looked up last night: the Roman civic religious term 'pontifex',
which was transferred to the Bishop of Rome, is commonly translated as
"bridge-builder", but actually originally meant something closer to
"pathfinder" or "waymaker"--that is, a psychopomp, precisely the role filled
by Legba. (See Jaan Puhvel, *Comparative Mythology* [1987], for the
derivation of 'pontifex' and related functions in Indo-European society.)
