I read the quote on C-SPAN.  He didn't say the Irish were drunks.  His
mistake was to mention drunks, bars and the Irish in the same sentence.
Perhaps he didn't notice how sensitive the Irish really are.  I believe he
was trying to say that the Irish are addicted to their fight, and no matter
how good sense dictates an end to it, they have to have their hit of
violence.  He should have said they were like heroin addicts.  It all comes
out the same way.  God forbid that anyone think an Irishman liked to take a
drink now and then.  Prudy
