-Caveat Lector- Doctors Warn of Choking Hazards of Peanuts October 12, 1999 Web posted at: 10:03 AM EDT (1403 GMT) LONDON (Reuters) -- Doctors called on Tuesday for peanut packets to carry health warnings to stop toddlers choking to death. Up to seven percent of all deaths of children under four years old are due to choking and almost half of those are caused by peanuts which can block a child's air passages when swallowed the wrong way. "This is a real nuisance, because there is no prevention campaign at all to deal with the problem," Dr Charles-Hugo Marquette, of the University Hospital Centre of Lille, France, said in a statement released in London. "All that would be needed would be a clear warning on packets to keep the contents out of reach of toddlers." Marquette and his colleagues told the annual meeting of the European Respiratory Society in Madrid that peanuts, pen caps, tiny toys, pins and paperclips are among the most dangerous objects to have around young children, who tend to put everything in their mouths. Children under four years also sometimes have difficulty swallowing food, which can become lodged in the throat when a child cries or laughs or during play. Copyright 1999 Reuters.
