Bork Responds to Being Bush-Whacked
'Mr. Bush's speech was by no means his first effort to distance himself from
the nasty conservatives. The week before, he seized a proposed minor tax
revision as the occasion to denounce House Republicans for trying to ‘balance
the budget on the backs of the poor,’ a patently false charge. Next, he
claimed that Republicans were too absorbed with affluence and not
sufficiently sensitive to people's needs. He gives the impression that the
backs of the poor would be safe in his administration, but that he intends to
reach the White House over the dead bodies of conservatives. No doubt Mr.
Bush and his advisers believe themselves to be emulating the sunny,
optimistic conservatism of Ronald Reagan, but they can't carry the tune or
remember the lyrics. Mr. Reagan did sound a note of hope and of pride in
America, but he most emphatically did not go out of his way to pander to the
‘moderates’ (read, Republican liberals) by attacking conservatives. Nor did
Mr. Reagan shy away from using divisive and confrontational rhetoric, when
reality called for it, as when he labeled the Soviet Union an ‘evil empire’
or denounced ‘welfare queens.’ Mr. Reagan wore the label conservative--no
qualifications attached--proudly. ... George W. Bush may be the only chance
to hold off the even worse Al Gore and Bill Bradley, but that we are reduced
to such a choice merely shows how far we have slouched.”
- Former judge and author of “Slouching Toward Gomorrah” Robert Bork, Wall
Street Journal, 10/11/99

Bush-Whacking Could Lose GOP Congress
“Texas Gov. George W. Bush's obsession with triangulation has put House
Republicans into a corner from which there may be no escape. Indeed, if the
GOP loses control of the House next fall, it may well be because the party's
presidential front-runner and his strategists made a conscious decision this
fall to sacrifice Congress at the altar of his presidential ambition. ...
Bush shouldn't fear defections to Pat Buchanan or whoever the Reform Party
candidate is. He may not even have much to fear from his various primary
opponents, but he should be very afraid that a few million conservative
voters will decide that if he wants to be president just so he can be
president, he'll have to get the job without their help. If that happens and
if the Democrats begin to get their act together, the young man from Austin
could turn out to be an unmitigated disaster for the party now worshipping at
his feet.”

Getting a “Lewinsky” - Take 1
“Bernie Lewinsky is mad. Seems Bernie was watching TV the other night when a
character in the show Law & Order: Special Victims Unit referred to one
person ‘doing a Lewinsky’ on another - which was TV's clever way of saying
one person was performing oral sex on another. Bernie wants an apology from
NBC and from Dick Wolf, producer of the series. He says the comment held his
daughter up to ridicule and defiled his family name. Sorry, Bernie. Your
daughter held herself up to ridicule the first time she dropped to her knees
and did a Lewinsky on the President of the United States. And you defiled
your family name when, instead of acting like a father and demanding Bill
Clinton's gonads on a platter, you gave TV interviews and talked about how
much you respected the President and thought he was doing a good job for the
country.”

Getting a “Lewinsky” - Take 2
The father of Monica Lewinsky, Dr. Bernard Lewinsky, has taken up for his
daughter by demanding an apology from the producers of the new cop show, ‘Law
& Order: Special Victims Unit.’ It seems that in a recent episode one
character describes another as ‘getting a Lewinsky.’ We all know what that
means. Papa Lewinsky, in a truly unfortunate turn of phrase, said he and his
daughter deserved an apology. ‘It's not right she be dragged down to the
floor again.’ Uh, Bernie?”
- Rich Galen, “Mullings,” 10/13/99
