Israeli Army Mindbenders Plant Stories: Newspaper

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - The Israeli army plants stories in local newspapers to
sharpen fears about the threat from Iran and the militant Lebanese Islamic
movement Hizbollah, Israel's Ha'aretz newspaper reported Tuesday.

Quoting unnamed Israeli journalists, it said material prepared by the army's
psychological warfare unit was fed first in Arabic and other publications
abroad and then passed on to the local media.

"Most of these items relate to the severity of the threat from Iran and
Hizbollah, and are apparently aimed at strengthening the Israeli public's
perception of this threat," Ha'aretz said.

The Israeli army declined to comment on the report.

Israel regards Iran as a prime threat.

It is also in conflict with Iranian-backed Hizbollah guerrillas, who are
waging a war of attrition against Israeli troops occupying a self-declared
"security zone" in south Lebanon.

Ha'aretz quoted one case where it said a "psych-ops" officer had told an
Israeli journalist: "It's important that you publish this item and I tell
you it's true. I know because I gave it to the (Arabic) paper myself."

Other examples it cited were a report of Hizbollah successes in electronic
warfare, planted to justify defense spending levels, and an alleged summit
meeting of Iranian and Islamic militant leaders at a luxury villa in Greece.
