Huang soon may be telling his story in public
WASHINGTON (AP) - A Justice Department official said
Thursday night that the way soon may be clear for
John Huang, a central figure in the campaign
fund-raising investigation, to testify before a
congressional committee.
The FBI has been conducting an espionage
investigation of Huang.
While not saying that the espionage investigation is
completed, the department official, speaking on
condition of anonymity, said the Justice Department
no longer will oppose granting limited immunity from
prosecution to Huang.
The House Government Reform Committee led by Rep.
Dan Burton, R-Ind., has been seeking Huang's
testimony.
But Huang's lawyer has set a grant of immunity as a
condition for his client to testify to Congress.
An immunity grant would make it extremely difficult
for the government to prosecute Huang if it ever
uncovered evidence of espionage.
Huang, a former Democratic National Committee
fund-raiser, has pleaded guilty in the probe of
campaign finance abuses in the 1996 presidential
election. Huang in August admitted he had conspired
to violate campaign finance laws and was sentenced
to one year of probation and a $10,000 fine.
