Top leaders invited to film on Waco siege

President Clinton, Attorney General Janet Reno, FBI Director Louis Freeh and
members of Congress are among the invitees to a Nov. 3 private screening in
Washington of Waco: A New Revelation, the movie's director said yesterday.

"We don't expect all of them to show up, but they're invited," said Jason
Van Vleet of the independent MGA Entertainment in La Porte, Colo.

The two-hour documentary is based on work by Fort Collins, Colo.-based
researcher Mike McNulty and Van Vleet, the movie's director and producer, on
the deadly 1993 siege outside Waco.

Van Vleet said investigators who work for John Danforth, who was appointed
by Reno to lead an independent investigation, told him they plan to be at
the screening.

"That's what they've said so far," he said.

A 51-day standoff between federal agents and members of the Branch Davidian
religious sect at Mount Carmel ended with a deadly conflagration; the bodies
of 80 sect members, at least 20 of them children, were found in the remains.

Van Vleet and McNulty have become lighting rods for public uproar over the
government's handling of the siege. McNulty's previous film, Waco: Rules of
Engagement, already had earned him notoriety in Washington.

For the latest film, Van Vleet and McNulty interviewed theologians, experts
in explosives and infrared imaging, witnesses, survivors, former federal
employees, attorneys representing the Branch Davidians, and investigators
from federal, state and local agencies.

In another development yesterday, a judge set mid-May as the opening date
for a trial in the sweeping civil lawsuit filed by Branch Davidians that
accuses the federal government of using excessive force during the siege.

In his three-page order, U.S. District Judge Walter Smith set jury selection
to begin May 15 in the case against FBI sharpshooter Lon Horiuchi, who was
in charge of the sniper post outside the Davidians' compound.

Horiuchi, who killed the wife of white separatist Randy Weaver during a 1992
standoff in Ruby Ridge, Idaho, has denied firing any shots during the Waco
standoff.

The remaining claims against the government filed by Davidian survivors and
relatives of the dead will be heard in a nonjury trial at the conclusion of
Horiuchi's case.
