-Caveat Lector- Gay Group Protests Zimbabwe Leader LONDON (AP) - Police arrested four gay rights campaigners Saturday after they attempted to make a citizen's arrest of Zimbabwe's President Robert Mugabe. Peter Tatchell, leader of a group called Outrage!, was arrested outside the Crowne Plaza hotel, according to one of the protesters. The group said they wanted to arrest Mugabe because of the alleged torture of two journalists in his country. The protesters had carried placards including one which said ``Mugabe stop abusing queers.'' Scotland Yard confirmed that four men had been arrested for criminal damage and public order offenses after they had jumped on to a car, but no names were released. Police would not say whether Mugabe was in the car, and no one answered the telephone at Zimbabwe's embassy. The Foreign Office confirmed that Mugabe had arrived in London earlier this week for a brief visit. ``Robert Mugabe has had a couple of days here on a private shopping trip and is going back to Zimbabwe this evening,'' said protester John Hunt, 47. ``The United Nations convention on torture has effect in this country, and we were intending to perform a citizen's arrest, and notified the attorney general,'' Hunt said. ``However, the police appeared to have misinterpreted their duty and have allowed Robert Mugabe to escape.'' Two journalists in Zimbabwe were arrested earlier this year for their reporting on that nation's involvement in Congo's civil war. The men later appeared in court with serious injuries they said were inflicted during questioning by military officers. The human right group Amnesty International has condemned the government for what it called the torture of the journalists. Mugabe has also been an outspoken critic of homosexuality.
