The first press conference that occurred Sunday morning, a spokesman for the NY/NJ Port Authority mentioned the "rumor" of flight990 landing at Edwards AFB and blamed some unknown source on having seen a luggage tag for Newark where the plane had been redirect to Saturday because of bad weather at JFK. Apparently EWK is the designation for the Newark, NJ and someone confused that with Edwards AFB. That from NY/NJ Port Authority. It was at that point the Edwards part of the story disappeared from all network new coverage to be replaced later with the story that the late arrival at JFK from LAX was a delay to change a tire on the jet.
