ASHEVILLE - Prosecutors plan to seek an indictment for practicing medicine
without a license against a Columbus man after a mother followed his advice
and her diabetic daughter died of insulin shock.

Laurence Perry, 46, who gave a Chesnee Road, Columbus, address, was charged
with involuntary manslaughter and jailed in lieu of a $50,000 secured bond.

Perry was charged with the death of 8-year-old Helena Rose Kolitwenzew on
Oct. 21.

"This lady (Helena's mother, Marion Kolitwenzew) apparently was referred to
this guy from someone," Buncombe County Sheriff Bobby Medford said. "He told
her to take her off of insulin and put her on some herbal (remedy). The girl
went into shock and died at Mission Hospital.

"Isn't that pathetic, an 8-year-old child?" said Medford. "Lord, it makes you
wonder what the world's coming to."

Although sheriff's Detective Lt. Sam Constance said Perry practiced out of
his home in Columbus as the General Health Care Facility for Preventive and
Alternative Medicine, District Attorney Ron Moore suggested he may have
enough evidence to show Perry, by legal definition, practiced here.

"Some act would have to occur within our county to give us jurisdiction,"
said Moore, adding, "We're going to present it (practicing without a license)
to the grand jury."

Practicing without a license is a Class A misdemeanor and can only be charged
by a grand jury indictment, Medford and Constance said. Polk County would
also have jurisdiction if Perry practiced without a license there.

Moore would not elaborate on how Buncombe County could have jurisdiction,
citing the pending nature of the case. But Constance said investigators
believe the felony manslaughter case can be heard in Buncombe County because
the girl, who lived in Asheville with her mother, died in Buncombe County.

Constance also said while detectives know the girl and her mother traveled at
least once to Perry's Columbus clinic, there were follow-up telephone calls
between the office and the camper where the mother and daughter lived in
Buncombe County.

He would not say how long the girl had been under Perry's care. "It is no
doubt a senseless death," said Constance, "and probably one of the most
senseless we've seen, because it could have been prevented."

Constance said an autopsy on the girl's body at Bowman Gray Hospital in
Winston-Salem revealed she died from a lack of insulin.

Marion Kolitwenzew has since returned to the Richmond, Va., area, and
Helena's burial was there, Constance said.
