a document, signed by [James Jesus] Angleton and [Richard] Helms
which says 'Someday we are going to have to account for Howard
Hunt's presence in Dallas on November 22, 1963.'"
"[E. Howard] Hunt and [Frank] Sturgis and these fellows lead,
through Watergate, directly to former President Richard Nixon.
"If Nixon was running Hunt and Sturgis in 1972 he could have
been running them in 1963. Nixon WAS running Hunt in 1960,
when Nixon was the White House political action officer for the
Bay of Pigs, as Vice President.
"Nixon planning a hit isn't really that far out. A former CIA
employee named Marion Cooper said that in January 1955 he
attended a meeting in Honduras at which the assassination of the
president of Panama, J. A. Remon, was discussed. The hit team
was present, as was then Vice President Richard Nixon. The
following day Remon was hit."

"The Authors vs. the CIA: The Pressure Sets In"
The Feds had always been interested in the methods and
results of my investigation. Before my book was published, the
CIA had one of their younger agents sit near me on a Boston to
New York shuttle flight and strike up a conversation. I began to
expound on the Kennedy assassination non-stop. Every few minutes
he would ask me, "So who's publishing your book?" I ignored the
question and kept on talking. When he asked me again I pretended
not to hear.
The plane was about to land and the agent was getting
nervous because he may have blown one of his early assignments.
"You've told me everything about the Kennedy assassination except
who's publishing your book. Please tell me so I can buy a copy."
I felt sorry for the guy and told him just as we were leaving,
"Okay, it's a firm called The Third Press." I knew Joe Okpaku
was beyond reproach and could not be compromised by the CIA.
When the Feds' study of my phone records revealed that a
close friend of mine was distantly related to the Gallo crime
family, they broke into that poor hippie artist's and went
through all of his papers. The only thing he found missing were
some rings which they could have put in their pockets without
compromising the operation when they left.
A few months later a Virginia Yippie drove me to CIA
Headquarters in Langley. The security guard at the gate
routinely made a notation of my driver's license plate number.
About one week later someone broke into my friend's house by
cutting the glass on one of the windows and then went through
every paper in the place without stealing anything. My friend's
parents were Seventh Day Adventists so they ended up searching
through a lot of religious material.
I received a few subtle warnings around this time.
When I did my research in DC I stayed at my friend John
Foster Berlet's apartment. One evening I came home from the
Archives and found all the lights out. I checked the fuses.
They were all good. I went down to the basement and found that
someone had removed the back-up fuses.
When I returned to my home in New York City the next night I
found the lights out there too. They were all good. I called
Con Edison. They turned the lights back on but told me that
someone had opened the manhole that supplied my building with
electricity and had turned off my power.
Was the CIA giving me a subtle hint that my "headlights"
would be extinguished next?
During the years I prepared for the lawsuit [filed to
prevent publication of "Coup d'Etat"] I spent countless hours in
the FBI and CIA reading rooms, the Library of Congress, the
National archives, Federal Documents Archives and District
Courts.
In 1975, while studying a Federal Case brought against Frank
Sturgis in Miami, I uncovered a document that should have been
sealed but wasn't, detailing Sturgis' role as informant for the
DEA. When "High Times" magazine published this document, the FBI
tried to arrest me for unsealing it. They came to the Federal
Courthouse and questioned an assistant clerk, Gloria Walters.
She told them that the document in question had not been sealed.
The FBI took fingerprints from the document anyway.
When I returned to Miami a few months later they put me
under intense surveillance. The night I flew back to New York
City they followed me to Miami International Airport. When I put
down a bag of worthless newspaper clippings and turned my back
for one moment to make a call they snatched it. I never let the
attache case with the important documents leave my hand.
When I deplaned in New York City and walked toward the
baggage claim area two gentlemen who looked like Federal agents
eyeballed me. I thought my time had finally come. Instead they
arrested a Cuban about 10 feet in back of me.
Intimidation, black bag jobs and media suppression of my
book and its theories stopped when the Carter Administration took
power in 1976. I began to mail the results of my investigation
to the Justice Department on a monthly basis.
During the time that Canfield and I worked with Congressman
Gonzalez some strange incidents befell him and his staff.
First of all, his aide, Gail Beagle, was attacked by a gang
of thugs and beaten. Then someone helped spring Congressman
Gonzalez's brother from a maximum security prison for the
criminally insane. Before his recapture, a police officer was
shot in the eye. Finally, someone took a shot at the Congressman
as he was leaving a speaking engagement in San Antonio.
I also turned over all my information to the House Select
Committee on Assassinations and became friendly with some of the
younger employees. One day I received a call from a courageous
aide named Edward Lopez. He was really excited.
"You are right about Hunt," he said. "I HEARD about a
document, signed by [James Jesus] Angleton and [Richard] Helms
which says 'Someday we are going to have to account for Howard
Hunt's presence in Dallas on November 22, 1963.'"
It didn't make sense to me.
You see, I do not think that there is a [single] document
which is in itself a "smoking gun" regarding the Kennedy
assassination. The [photographs of the mysterious "three tramps"
arrested in Dallas on the day of the assassination] are the
closest thing to a smoking gun in the Kennedy case.
The tramps are Hunt and Sturgis and these fellows lead,
through Watergate, directly to former President Richard Nixon.
If Nixon was running Hunt and Sturgis in 1972 he could have been
running them in 1963. Nixon was also running Hunt in 1960, as
Nixon was the White House political action officer for the Bay of
Pigs, as Vice President.
Nixon was in on the hit because he is one of the world's
biggest "sore losers." Nixon planning a hit isn't really that
far out. A former CIA employee named Marion Cooper said that in
January 1955 he attended a meeting in Honduras at which the
assassination of the president of Panama, J. A. Remon, was
discussed. The hit team was present, as was then Vice President
Richard Nixon. The following day Remon was hit. Warren
Commission document 279, "Assassination of Jose Remon, Panama,"
remains classified in the National Archives.
On pages 88-90 we showed that the [code] phrase for the
Kennedy hit was "Bay of Pigs." H. R. Haldeman tells us in "The
Ends of Power," "In all of those references to the Bay of Pigs
[in the White House tapes] [Nixon] was actually referring to the
Kennedy assassination."
Haldeman also said, "The CIA literally erased any connection
between Kennedy's assassination and the CIA ..."
I began my investigation of the "smoking gun" document by
calling former CIA official Victor Marchetti, who at the time I
thought was my friend. I asked Victor what he thought of a CIA
document placing Hunt on the scene of the Kennedy assassination.
He told me that the agency was going to burn Hunt by doing a
"limited hang-out" and would check into it further. Marchetti
claimed that he had called a man named William Corson and that
Corson had verified that such a document existed.
On August 20, 1978, the "Sunday News Journal" of Wilmington
Delaware ran an article by Joe Trento titled
"WAS HOWARD HUNT IN DALLAS THE DAY JFK DIED?"
"Washington: A secret CIA memorandum says that
E. Howard Hunt was in Dallas the day JFK was
murdered and that top agency officials plotted
to cover up Hunt's presence there. The 1966
secret memo, now in the hands of the HSCA
[House Select Committee on Assassinations],
places Hunt in Dallas on November 22. Richard
Helms and James Angleton initialled the memo,
according to investigators. According to sources
close to HSCA the document reveals, 'Three years
after Kennedy's murder, and shortly after Helms
and Angleton were elevated to their highest
positions in the CIA [Director and Director of
Counterintelligence] they discussed the fact
that Hunt was in Dallas on the day of the
assassination and that his presence there had
to be kept secret.'"
Helms and Angleton thought that news of Hunt's presence in
Dallas would be damaging to the Agency should it leak out. Helms
and Angleton felt that a cover story, giving Hunt an alibi for
being elsewhere on the day of the assassination "ought to be
considered." Trento described his sources as being both inside
and outside of the CIA. He could not reveal their names because
he had promised them that he would not do so. His sources had
actually shown him the memo.
When Angleton testified in the Hunt vs. Weberman lawsuit, he
was asked if he talked to Trento about his authorship of the CIA
memorandum. Angleton testified, "After publication I had a
telephone call from Trento in the office. He said he was calling
from the office of one WILLIAM CORSON, who is the ex-Colonel of
the Marines 'Penthouse' representative and he ... I think his
first question was, 'Have you heard from Howard Hunt?' And I
said, 'No.' And his next questions ... It was a whole series of
staccato questions, and I told him my lunch was getting cold and
I was at the Army-Navy club and that was the end of it."
Corson was a retired Marine Corps colonel with good
intelligence community connections that included James Angleton.
It was Corson who had allegedly told Marchetti that Angleton had
confirmed the existence of the internal CIA memo placing Hunt in
Dallas on November 22, 1963 when Marchetti called him.
When deposed by Mark Lane, Corson categorically denied being
Marchetti's or Trento's source since he stated he never saw the
document in question.
What is the truth about the "smoking gun" document?
Its source was probably James Angleton. Angleton seems to
have passed the document on to Corson, who allegedly confirmed
its existence for Marchetti and may have shown it to Trento.
Somewhere along the line Eddie Lopez heard about it and
telephoned me.
Assuming that the document itself actually existed, Trento
had to rely on his source's bona fides for the fact that it was
not a forgery. Who could have had better bona fides than
Angleton? His name was ON the document.
I believe that Angleton FABRICATED the document as part of a
very clever disinformation campaign aimed at turning the HSCA off
to [the REALITY of] the Hunt/Dallas connection. By creating this
document and letting it leak out that the HSCA had it, when they
really didn't, Angleton put the HSCA in a position where they
would have to sympathize with Hunt since he had been "unjustly"
accused. HSCA Chief Counsel Robert Blakey was quoted as saying,
"This memo does not exist. It never happened. It is a lie. The
story has done great damage to Howard Hunt."
The HSCA report contains the following footnote:
"During the course of the Committee, a rumor was circulating
that the Committee had uncovered a memorandum in CIA files
indicating Hunt was in dallas on November 22, 1963. The rumor
was not founded on fact. In addition Hunt gave the Committee a
sworn deposition in which he denied the allegation, and the
Committee found no evidence that contradicted Hunt's deposition."
More than ten years have passed since word of the document
first surfaced, yet we have not yet seen the document. Angleton
probably shredded his creation since he never planned on
circulating it publicly. The document was bait, and Trento and
Marchetti took the bait. They were unwitting participants in
floating a false news story and all of them left themselves open
for a libel suit. That Hunt chose to sue Marchetti over this
very story is no coincidence. He knew there was no such document
and he might be able to get a judgment against the researcher who
published a story about it.
In this way, Hunt would be able to suppress future works
that linked him to the assassination.

maneuver by diabolical counterintelligence genius Angleton,
famous for devising mind-boggling "Chinese boxes" that rendered
his adversaries in foreign intelligence unable to decide whether
information is true, or false masquerading as true, or true
masquerading as false, or true masquerading as false masquerading
as true, or-- ad infinitum. Here, I think, he has done something
amazing. He has let the "Coup d'Etat" authors, personally, and
the whole world, hear the TRUTH -- but in such a way as to
discredit it as FALSE -- actually rubbing it in their faces,
knowing they can't do a damned thing about it, and in the process
undermining the public's belief in it. One can almost hear
Angleton laughing maniacally, thumbing his nose at ALL of us ...)

"In an interview with the New York Times [Dec 25, 1974]
Angleton was asked about alleged wrongdoing [in the CIA]. He
answered, 'I've got problems ... A mansion has many rooms, and
there were many things going on during the period of the
[antiwar] bombings.'
"And seemingly out of nowhere, Angleton added: 'I'm not
privy to who struck John [Kennedy].'"
