Author of the "Protocols of the Elders of Zion" Identified?

A member of the Tsarist secret police who became a Bolshevik.

THE author of the notorious anti-Semitic forgery, Protocols of the Elders of
Zion, has been identified as a Russian propagandist who served both the Tsar
and the Bolsheviks.
The Protocols have proved an inspiration for generations of anti-Semites all
over the world, despite having proved to be fake within a few decades of
their appearance at the beginning of the century. They purport to reveal a
secret Jewish-Masonic conspiracy to overthrow monarchy and Christian
civilisation through the manipulation of wars, revolutions and capitalism,
paving the way for world Jewish domination.

Research by a leading Russian historian, Mikhail Lepekhine, in recently
opened archives has found the forgery to be the work of Mathieu Golovinski,
opportunistic scion of an aristocratic but rebellious family who drifted into
a life of espionage and propaganda work. After working for the Tsarist secret
service he later changed sides and joined the Bolsheviks.
Mr Lepekhine's findings, published yesterday in the French magazine
L'Express, would appear to clear up the last remaining mystery surrounding
the Protocols. Though banned in Europe, copies are still to be found in
Middle Eastern bookshops.

Golovinski was born in 1865 in Ivachevka in the Simbirsk region. His father,
a friend of Dostoyevsky who was condemned to death for his part in a plot
then pardoned, died when he was 10 leaving him to be brought up by his mother
and a French governess. His subsequent career evokes the world of
assassination and intrigue described in Joseph Conrad's Under Western Eyes,
as revolutionaries and reactionaries struggled for the soul of Russia.

He briefly studied law before drifting into the Holy Brotherhood, an
anti-Semitic secret society which used forgery as a tool against the
revolutionaries, publishing phoney newspapers and tracts. His contacts there
found him a job in the government press department where he acted as a
Tsarist spin doctor, placing articles in compliant newspapers and paying the
salaries of certain journalists.

When his chief protector died and he was publicly denounced by Maxim Gorky as
an informer he was forced to look for work abroad and chose Paris. There he
made contact with the head of the Russian secret police, Pierre Ratchkovski,
who put him to work writing pro-Russian stories to be planted in the French
press.

Later he was charged with a more important mission. Reactionary circles in
Moscow, dismayed at the progress being made by modernisers in the court of
Nicolas II, hit on the idea of a forgery that would demonstrate to the tsar
that the rising tide of capitalism in Russia was really a Jewish conspiracy
aimed at overthrowing him and the old order.

At the end of 1900 or the beginning of 1901 Golovinski was set to work. He
leant heavily on a pamphlet written in 1864 by an anti-Bonapartist lawyer who
claimed Napoleon III was engaged in a plot to usurp all the powers of the
French people.

How We Love PM Mahathir

Malaysia Struck by Mad Kow-Tow Disease

Businessmen and educators latest to succumb to brain-destroying epidemic.

KUALA LUMPUR. A devastating outbreak of Mad Kow-Tow disease swept Malaysia
last week as hundreds of victims fell to their knees in humiliating homage to
Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad. With General Elections coming soon, the
ACCIM and the Federation of Chinese Associations of Malaysia last week
pledged to fully support Prime Minister Mahathir.

"We sincerely pledge to support every measure taken in facing any threat to
the integrity and sovereignty of the country, its economy and glorious
leadership," ACCCIM assistant secretary-general David Chua declared at a
press conference, foaming in the mouth as he was led away by men in white
coats.

Mad Kow-Tow disease attacks the brain and eliminates any sense of integrity,
self-respect and independent thought in the minds of sufferers. The disease
then eats away at the body until the backbone crumbles and the testicles
wither away. Some of the worst cases have been diagnosed with eyesight
problems, experiencing episodes of blindness to human rights violations,
corruption, cronyism and authoritarianism.

Victims have also exhibit an uncontrollable urge to fall on their knees and
apply their tongues to the anuses of passing Prime Ministers or Barisan
Nasional politicians.
Because of its similarity to the Mad Cow disease that struck Britain last
year, police are investigating the possibility that the Mad Kow-Tow disease
is yet another evil foreign plot to destroy Malaysia.

The Health Minister declared in a press conference today that his Ministry
has assessed the Mad Kow-Tow epidemic and now knows as much about is as they
do of the J-E and Nipah virus - absolutely nothing.

However, scientists suspect that the source of the virus may be livestock
feed that was tainted by sewage from local newspaper reports.

When interviewed, victims of the Mad Kow-Tow disease said that they realised
they had a problem but it was a matter of life-and-death. "In these difficult
times, I'd swear blind allegiance to Adolf Hitler if I had to," one
businessman admitted. "I have a condo in Queensland and a villa in Swizerland
to look after," he said woefully.

"I don't know what all the fuss is all about," another victim continued.
"People like Ling Liong Sik have been kow-towing for years."

German Politics

Buying the German Elections

Cash payoff in a parking lot.

ALLEGATIONS of corruption have returned to haunt Germany's Christian
Democrats (CDU) with the disclosure that in 1991 the party's accountant took
delivery of a briefcase containing a million marks (350,000) in banknotes in
a car park in Switzerland.

The most worrying problem for the CDU is not the transaction, but the
possibility that it will prove to be only the tip of an iceberg of illegal
contributions to party funds. Karlheinz Schreiber, a Bavarian arms dealer now
under arrest in Canada, has admitted to German authorities that he handed
over the money. The Germans are seeking to extradite him on charges of
bribery and tax evasion.

He said the money was a simple donation to CDU funds by an unknown third
party and had nothing to do with the permission granted six months earlier by
the government of the then Chancellor, Helmut Kohl, to the Thyssen concern to
export 36 armoured personnel carriers to Saudi Arabia. Mr Schreiber helped to
broker this deal, which the Kohl government at first blocked before giving
its consent in February 1991.

The CDU's published accounts show no trace of Mr Schreiber's million marks
even though he said that he handed the briefcase containing the cash to Horst
Weyrauch, an accountant and auditor who was close to Mr Kohl and who remains
to this day a key figure in the management of the party's finances.

Walther Leisler Kiep, 73, the treasurer of the CDU for 21 years until 1992,
admitted to prosecutors that he was also present when the money was handed
over outside a shopping centre at Sankt Margrethen, a few miles from the
German border on the Swiss side of Lake Constance. Mr Kiep is under
investigation by the public prosecutor in Augsburg on suspicion of failing to
pay tax on part of the money, which the authorities believe he used to settle
legal bills incurred during his successful appeal against his conviction in
connection with the Flick affair, in which the CDU and the Free Democrats
were found to have received huge illegal donations from German industry
during the Eighties.

A committee of MPs is due to start investigating the Kiep affair next week
and will also be examining what other illegal contributions the CDU received.
Under German law any contribution of more than 20,000 marks a year to a
political party must be listed in its accounts. If the CDU is found to have
broken this law, it could have to pay back public money it received.
Mr Kohl, who was chairman of the CDU from 1973 to 1998, has denied all
knowledge of the donation. "You want to start a smear campaign, I can see
that in your face," he said to one journalist who tried to question him about
the affair. "Clear off now."

Social Democrat and Green MPs want to investigate whether the CDU received
money from Elf, the French oil company which the German government allowed to
take over the Minol chain of petrol stations and the Leuna oil refinery in
the former East Germany after German reunification in 1990. Until the CDU's
defeat last autumn it was able to block the release of official documents
which may show how Elf gained permission for the takeover. Chancellor
Schrder's government has good reason to allow the release of these papers,
especially as it is far behind the CDU in the opinion polls.

The financial situation of the CDU improved dramatically in the years 1988 to
1992, with a large deficit (89 million marks) transformed into a modest
surplus (more than 10 million marks), leading some observers to argue that
the deficit could have been cleared with undeclared gifts. The CDU has sought
to deter Mr Schrder's Social Democrats from delving too deeply into the Kiep
affair by threatening to investigate the financing of a house belonging to
Bodo Hombach, until earlier this year one of Mr Schrder's closest colleagues
but now in charge of the European Union's Balkan aid. Mr Schrder was on
chummy terms with Mr Kiep until recently, describing him as "a German
patriot" and a man "with whom you can go horse-stealing".
