The Canaanite-Phoenician "Melkarth" was the Semitic god Ba'al (a name itself
meaning only "Lord") under a particular title, "King of the World," cf.
Hebrew "Melek (ha)Aretz."
Why the Greeks identified that god with Hercules was not because of his
"heroics" but because originally Hercules, like the Babylonian Gilgamesh, was
the human role-model in the Greek Mysteries -- a semi-divine human king who,
a la the dying-and-resurrected Tammuz (Dumuzi) in Babylon with whom Ba'al was
identified by the Israelites, ritually died and journeyed to the Otherworld,
"in spirit" returning to this world to tell the tale.
Among the archaic Greeks, a "hero" became a "king" (a semi-divine office,
like being the Pope as "vicar of Christ") through INITIATION, accompanied by
certain "labors" which involved symbolically recapitulating the "battles" of
the Sun passing through the Zodiac -- through the 12 Signs, these
"territories" locally ruled by other, lesser gods.
All this, of course, ultimately grounded in the night-time stellar journey of
the Pharaoh as "dead" Sun god, depicted in the Egyptian Book of Am-Duat and
Pyramid Texts ...
