Archer investigation begins
The disgraced wanna-be London mayor, Jeffrey Archer, is facing two possible
court cases. The police have begun a criminal investigation, which could put
him in prison. And the Daily Star is threatening legal action to get back
the record libel damages it had to pay out 12 years ago. Lord Archer has
admitted asking a friend to lie in court, during that case.

Or if you don't have Real Audio you can read it here.

The Daily Star wrongly claimed Jeffrey Archer had sex with a prostitute in
September 1986. He sued for libel and won half a million pounds in damages.
But it's now clear that if he'd had to explain in court where he was on the
eighth of that month, he would have used a false alibi. Lord Archer had
persuaded his friend Ted Francis to lie, and say they'd been having dinner
together. In fact the millionaire author was out with a woman.

The Star's editor, Peter Hill: "Jeffrey Archer must be guilty of some crime
I think. I would say that he was at the very least guilty of an act that
would be likely to pervert the course of justice".

Jeffrey Archer's been told to stand-down as the Tory's candidate. Party
leader William Hague: "We were given false assurances by Jeffrey Archer and
as soon as we've had an allegation about him that has been substantiated and
shown to be true, we have acted quickly and correctly".

But Max Hastings, from the London Evening Standard, says Archer was always
the wrong man for the job: "I always thought that you could no more blame
Jeffrey Archer for lying and cheating his way through life than you can
blame a fox for going after chickens! The people I blame for this fiasco are
all those who supported Archer, believed in Archer, went to his parties and
became entangled in the whole Archer circus."

Jeffrey Archer's friend Stephan Shakespeare: "It's 12 years ago and what's
happened now is that they've got him on the floor, they're kicking his head
in, tearing out his guts and they're hanging around there like vultures".

But publicist Max Clifford's 19,000 deal with the News of the World, says
get used to it because there's more to come: "You'll have to wait tomorrow
to find out what else Ted Francis has got to say. Although I will say that
there's two other people who have been to see me in recent weeks who might
now want to come forward and talk about Jeffrey Archer and what they know."

Legal experts say the criminal case against Jeffrey Archer probably won't
come to court. But the Star wants its costs, the damages it paid out and
interest. A total of three million pounds. And the Conservative party is
back where it started, looking for a candidate to stand in the race to
become London's mayor.
