I would like to preface this by saying that what follows is purely speculation on my part, an analysis gleaned from open sources; but it might be useful and stimulate further comments on this web site. After researching different reports on the crash of this flight, I tend to think it was due to a criminal act, probably of terrorist origin. It has been well reported that suicide is against the Islamic religion (haram) and I tend to rule it out. My reasoning is, that if he wanted to suicide, crashing the plane, why didn't he wait until he was scheduled to take control of the plane some two hours after he did? He would then have been well over the middle of the Atlantic, in very deep water, out of radar range, making it impossible to find the wreak or know what happened. Nobody would have suspected suicide and his family would have not been dishonored by such an act. Further, if he was at all suicidal, I suspect he would have taken his life in a solitary way and not bring down a plane load of innocent people including his friends. Now, if he was acting under a terrorist contract, it would make sense to crash the plane in an area where evidence could one day prove a terrorist act. It is a fact that the recent trend in terrorist acts has been to keep them nearly anonymous, so as to avoid direct retaliation and to heighten the fear factor by being purposely murky - accenting the fear of the unknown. Eventually, governments draw their own conclusions on who or what organization was responsible for an attack, but they are rendered helpless to respond due to the obscureness of the evidence. Thereby, the terrorist group passes on their "message" by way of this unconventional instrument of state policy, with almost total impunity. Why Egypt Air? The timing implies a terrorist action. The height of Egyptian tourist season is approaching, as is the millennium holiday excursions to that ancient region. What better time to sabotage the Egyptian state tourist industry than now? The flight also had many Americans aboard and since we know a holy war (jihad) has been declared against the USA by Islamic terrorist factions, it adds a motive to the supposition. The relief co-pilot in question, Gamil al-Batouti, seems to have deliberately taken over the controls from the co-pilot at the time of the crash, and in a very determined manner, according to the voice recorder. Then the pilot, Ahmed al-Habashi leaves the cockpit, leaving Batouti in control of the aircraft. The autopilot is disconnected, engine power reduced (not cut or it would raise the alarm). Then the plane is deliberately put into a steep decent (producing chaos and reducing the chance of someone regaining control). Shortly thereafter the pilot returns and asks "What's going on?" and tries to bring the aircraft out of the dive by pulling back on the stick, but can't because controls are working at cross purposes. Finally, the engines are cut off, using the cut-out switch, then the air breaks are activated - all sure methods to provoke a crash and the very contrary reaction to recover control. I purposely downplay the disputable phrases Batouti pronounced many times during this incident, leaving that to the work to the translators and interpreters. While it adds to the suspicion of foul play, it is not yet essential evidence and is still under discussion, while the actual events clearly speak for themselves. While Batouti does not fit the typical terrorist profile, allegedly he was spending over his means when out of the country. And since terrorist profiling is freely available to nearly anyone, it makes sense a terrorist organization would chose someone who does not fit the type. Furthermore, terrorist cells are now recruiting among the middle and upper class. Jihad has gone not only anonymous but classless.
