China Taking Stealth Out of US Stealth NewsMax.com November 29, 1999 Communist China appears to have out-stealthed America's fabled stealth warplanes, according to a report in the Dec. 6 issue of Newsweek. It has United States intelligence specialists very worried "because it can defeat current Air Force tactics by overcoming enemy air defenses," the magazine says in its issue just out. According to Newsweek: U.S. military and civilian defense experts are so alarmed that a secret meeting has been called right away to figure out what to do. If their worst fears are realized, the revolutionary new Chinese early-warning system could cancel out the advantage of U.S. stealth planes like the F-117 bomber, which played an effective role in NATO air attacks on Yugoslavia earlier this year, and even the F-22 "fighter of the future." Like most air defenses, China's use radars to detect, lock onto and track inbound enemy attack planes, passing along their location to ground-to-air missile batteries and airborne interceptors. The vulnerability of that radar system is that attackers can send missiles back along those same radar beams to destroy their points of origin before Chinese counter-measures can be taken. The beauty of the new Chinese technology is that its defenses don't have to use radar. Instead, its new system - called Passive Coherent Location - monitors the waves of civilian radio and television transmitters, detecting the slight turbulence that stealth planes cause as they fly through those wavelengths. And since the Chinese PCL emits no signals of its own, it is impossible to find and destroy.
