[Dick Farley <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> writes]:
Fred,
Thanks. I'm aware of Bob Jahn's work at Princeton from my previous
association with the Human Potential Foundation, whose chair was Sen.
Claiborne Pell and whose president was C. B. "Scott" Jones, both of whom knew
Jahn and his work very well. Likewise the work of Jahn's former research
associate, Angela Thompson, who left and went to work for a time in the
operation of Robert Bigelow, out of Las Vegas, in which several former
high-level CIA and Navy exotic-science researchers take part. Thompson served
as a "target" for purported "dream projection" and other research while at
Jahn's lab, which had "other things going on" than remote influencing of a
few ball bearings dropping into chutes at random for psychics to try and
shift. Their "official" work came initially from concerns that Soviet
psychics might be able to use "PK" (psycho-kinesis) to remotely influence
targeting or launch codes in our ICBM's, after work at SRI (Stanford)
reportedly demonstrated intermittent random possibilities of same. There was
also other work on countermeasures to this, such as "psychic cannon" research
buried deep in West Virginia at a technical university in that state.
So...what's the point? The point is that a lot of supposedly "crazy" targets
are not!
The reason I shared the news item about the NASA/USAF-derived "brain-trainer"
is because it suggests a link between this technology (i.e., performance
enhancement in a "black box") and pilot-interfacing with exotic aeronautical
technology. Much of the applied work on the "pilot-brain-trainer" was done at
Wright-Patterson, according to a 1993 Popular Mechanics (or Pop. Science,
can't recall precisely which without my files right here) piece about it, at
the peak of the "Roswell crashed saucer" thing, which some believe was a
"Star Wars / Strategic Defense Initiative" cover-op to fool the former Soviet
Air Force and other "players" along the high-frontier of space war. I don't
offer that as my opinion about any actual "real" crashed saucer or alien UFO,
I simply note that for 50+ years their "UFO show" has ALSO served as a
"cover-op."
The device now on the retail market may indeed offer simply more "focusing,"
and is mildly similar to what two former-Soviet scientists used for their
"Psycho-Correction" device, although they processed the brainwaves and fed
them back in, much more actively and "aggressively" than the "brain-trainer"
would be able to do. And to clarify for other readers, the NASA/USAF research
on "brain-machine" interfaces has gone considerably beyond simply "learning
enhancements," ranging (at least in the public record...perhaps deeper in
classified research & development) into actual enhancing of aircraft control
by linking the mind of the pilot to the computers controlling aircraft.
The link to "brain-mind" and "mind-influence" is obvious, at least to some on
this list I've been following for some time and occasionally communicating
with, who know there have been credible reports in the US and elsewhere that
"remote projection" of certain signals affecting the same "performance" and
"memory" areas of the brain at a distance, have been "black boxed" and
reportedly demonstrated. Specifically, the issues lean toward amygdalar
responses, whereby external signals don't actually put "information" or
"fact-based data" and specific words/phrases into the target's mind, but can
stimulate the hormonal and endocrine responses associated with the parts of
the brain affecting "fight-or-flight," anger, passivity and other key
emotional states. There are reports, including from Dr. Keith Choquette
(formerly at Harvard and doing research at a Veterans Administration hospital
near Boston) that he personally had experiences "hearing voices" which
claimed (to him, as he wrote, and conveyed to me in personal interviews which
Keith initiated through an intermediary) to be "CIA."
Choquette called CIA to ask them if they were doing "any research into this,"
and they routed him (Choquette says) to Dr. Ron Pandolfi, who Choquette says
told him to contact Dr. C. B. "Scott" Jones, (see above and below for
reference to Jones).
Other "USAF/NASA"-related psychological and perceptual "mind" research,
perhaps of the allegedly unethical kind that is only coming to public light,
has reportedly been undertaken at various Veterans Administration and
correctional facility hospitals and psychiatric facilities. This particular
list "cares" about such possibilities, because the disinformation and
"marginalization" to which purported victims of suspected "mind-influencing"
techniques and/or technologies are consistently subjected parallels the
treatment which "UFO abducteeds" and "contactees" have gotten for YEARS,
oddly by some of the same people associated with VA and other psychiatric
institutions.
And while we're on the topic, projection of signals which could remotely
influence a brain-mind of, say, a nuclear submarine skipper or a strategic
bomber pilot, would be a legitimate focus of research, as would research into
possible "countermeasures," whether these would be of a "black-box" or simply
a "mental disciplining" approach. So being involved in such research, per se,
is not intended as an "indictment" or in any way to impugn the motives,
patriotism or humanity of such researchers. It IS a suggestion that, to the
degree such research is now "out of government" and into a world of
billionaire, true-believing philanthropists or unelected elites, it's a
problem!
It is notable only for the fact of it, and without any suggestion on my part
that he is or was in any way involved with alleged "mind-influence" or other
nefarious programs, that a noted "debunker" and "skeptic" of national
notoriety, one Robert Baker, of CSICOP (Committee for Scientific
Investigation of Claims of the Paranormal, which also gives harbor to James
"the Amazing" Randi, debunker of psychics, and Phil Klass, UFO debunker and
senior avionics writer for "Aviation Week and Space Technology," the trade
publication of the commercial and military/intelligence aerospace industry),
has been first to show up on television to disclaim "hypnotically recovered
memories" as these were discussed by purported (or perceived) "UFO abductees"
raped on UFOs by ET. Baker is often listed as "adjunct faculty" at the
University of Kentucky, but according to the files at the Jimmy Carter
Presidential Library, in Atlanta (associated with Carter's 1976 public
acknowledgment of his 1969 "UFO sighting," which political opponents
publicized, and which CSICOP played a key role in debunking as being "Venus"
on the horizon), Baker's with the VA, which also has a medical center
adjacent to the UK Medical School, in Lexington, KY.
Odd that you mentioned Jahn's work, which brought to mind Scott Jones, Pell
and their benefactors, (such as billionaire philanthropist and industrialist
Laurance S. Rockefeller (a Princeton alum), and Prince Hans Adam II of
Liechtenstein, in "mind-influencing" research, monitoring it and to some
degree, funding it. Ask George Hansen, formerly at Jahn's lab at Princeton,
what he thinks of this stuff, etc. He's written about it. Also Dr. McConnell,
emeritus professor at Univ. of Pittsburgh, or Dr. Ian Stephenson, emeritus at
Univ. of Virginia, both of whom were board members of the American Society
for Psychical Research (ASPR) when Jones was on its board and served as its
president. In McConnell's and Stephenson's circulated opinions, Jones left
that organization in chaos and far afield from "scientific credibility." But
Lt. Col. Donald Ware, the primary "mover & shaker" behind the "Gulf Breeze"
UFO sightings, which has spawned a cult and conference business centered on
it, told me he considered what "Jones did to the ASPR" a necessary shake-up,
that ASPR was "too stodgy" and standing in the way of the need for us to
believe and move on with the implications of "what it all means." (Ware, to
me, August 1994, etc.). Now either Ware actually believes this (he professes
a following for the "O.A.H.S.P.E." teachings of channelled materials and
public says he's ferried messages from UFO occupants to the command staff at
Eglin Air Force Base, Florida on various topics), or he's just pulling our
legs in some official "disinfo op" that's way out of control. (?)
Ware is a retired tactical fighter jock with a master's in nuclear
engineering, so he's either really good at playing his role ("living his
cover"), or gone "around the bend."
While we could argue whether ASPR ever actually had any credibility among
other scientists, the point is that the links among "mind-in-a-box"
researchers, military "brain-mind," and intelligence "mind-influencing," and
supposed "UFOlogy" and "psychic" R & D is undeniable. For the researchers and
purported (or perceived) victims of such things on this list, it may be
helpful for them to realize that some of their fears are, indeed, not the
stuff of simple "delusions" and "paranoid fantasies" as conventional
therapists, who may or may not know about high-level, long-standing and
relatively well-funded research programs, technology developments and
"applied anomalous phenomena," are usually predisposed to telling patients
claiming same.
Specifically: When the Human Potential Foundation (circa 1993) brought over
two former Soviet "mind-scientists" from Moscow Medical Institute, (for
reference, see "Defense Electronics," July 1993 issue, Page 17, written by
Mark Tapscott), to demonstrate their "Psycho-Correction" brain-changing,
attitude-changing system,
the euphemistic term Jones used in briefing Rockefeller (who was paying for
it) and Pell (who at the time was Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations
Committee), was "Subliminal Negotiations." Ever the master of
"bureaucracy-speak" is Scott.
Now think about that, Fred and list-members. Not only in arms control and
other diplomatic and defense-related negotiations, but also for labor
relations, dispute resolution processes and other "hard bargaining" contexts,
the clandestine ability to exert some low-level (or even higher-level)
influences on the brain-mind-attitudes or emotions of the other parties to
such a negotiation would provide an advantage and, by definition, undermine
the actual process of negotiated agreement. If it could be applied (not
necessarily by "our side") to larger groups in a targeted population, it'd be
even more troublesome during periods of political unrest, (real or
"fomented").
As for the "brain trainer" described in the news release I forwarded and to
which you responded, the importance of the NASA/USAF reference is for the our
members to appreciate that their government indeed DOES involve itself in
front-line research and applied technologies associated with performance,
behavior and warfighting ability, as well as negotiation and diplomatic
contexts. Added to the well-established and perhaps unparalleled psychiatric
"profiling" capabilities developed by CIA and other of our (and others')
intelligence agencies, there are potentials for a "weapons system" with
capabilities to exert nearly undetectable influences on important "outcomes."
To the degree these technologies are away from the public dialogue, funded or
even "owned" by powerful self-anointed elites or their representatives
holding views about the general citizenry and our rights which may differ
from our governing principles, it is notable whenever the "public versions"
of these ongoing research and application efforts surface. In this country,
whenever we citizens can "find" this, we must act to insure that it is
regulated by some process linked to National Command Authority.
Thanks for your reference, sorry to go on about it at such length, but the
readers of this list merit full explanations and some histories to leaven the
plethora of pudding and general disinformation and invective to which they
(we) are usually subjected.

Dick Farley <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Peak Achievement Trainer(TM)First Accurate Interface Between theHuman Brain
and the Personal Computer Patented
LOUISVILLE, Ky., Nov. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Mindwaves, Ltd., and its exclusive
licensee, NeuroTechnology, Inc., have been granted U.S. Patent approval on
software and hardware for the first clearly accurate interface between the
human brain and a PC. Their initial application, the Peak Achievement
Trainer(TM), is a PC based brainwave biofeedback training program based on
NASA and Air Force research on peak performing pilots and the latest brain
imaging studies. The Peak Achievement Trainer increases both concentration
and relaxation to enable peak mental performance in employees, students,
athletes, and other individuals.
The Peak Achievement Trainer has recently been selected by the United States
Olympic Committee Training Center to train Olympic athletes to focus their
attention. According to Dr. Jonathan Cowan, BCIAC, CPPS, President and CEO
of NeuroTechnology d/b/a Peak Achievement Training(TM) (the licensor) and
General Partner of Mindwaves, Ltd. (the licensee), "Many other sports
psychologists are also using the Peak Achievement Trainer to help their
athletes to focus better. Other users include athletes and teams world-wide,
training centers, corporations, schools and therapists." Peak Achievement
Training is appropriate for anyone who wants to quickly improve their mental
and emotional performance.
The Trainer uses the first truly accurate interface between the human brain
and a PC to create a series of mental exercises that change the video and
audio output of the computer. Dr. Cowan stated "Many users have told us they
can really sense that the Trainer tells them when they are focusing on one
thing and then they can see when they get distracted, all usually within
their first few minutes of use. Its far more responsive and easier to
understand than anything that was previously available. We see a tremendous
potential for helping people to excel."
The Peak Achievement Trainer is a professional concentration training
program, so simple that the individual PC user can set it up themselves. It
includes the patented SensorPhone or Sensor Band, which replace messy
electrodes and paste with sponges soaked in salt water, the peripheral that
digitizes the brainwave signal, software, patented training protocols, a
videotape that explains the setup and the first session, a nine-lesson
training manual, and an audiotape. Since the Air Force and NASA research
also found that the brainwaves of expert pilots cycle between concentration
and relaxation - taking short microbreaks in which the brain recharges
itself, the Peak Achievement Trainer(TM) also teaches individuals to take
these microbreaks, which play an important role in maintaining the ability to
stay focused as the day wears on. It significantly improves concentration
and relaxation in children and adults without using potentially harmful drugs
such as Ritalin.
"The Trainer can improve school and workplace safety, two major areas of
concern in the U.S." Dr. Cowan said. He also stated, "The training reduces
hyperactivity and impulsivity, thereby reducing the potential for violent
actions." Dr. Cowan pointed out that by lowering stress and anxiety, employer
healthcare costs and employee absenteeism can be reduced. "The training," he
added, "also improves concentration, enabling students to make better grades,
employees to perform better at work, and athletes and executives to reach
their peak performance."
The new patent, issued on November 9, 1999, protects the brainwave
measurement methodology for its Peak Achievement Training(TM) program, the
design of the brainwave sensor, and the use of the brainwave measurement to
track an individual's interest in any media presentation from moment to
moment. The technology can be used to make the video games and educational
software more interesting for each individual user, and to adjust the
edutainment programs to the attention span of the user.
NeuroTechnology will be exploring the potential of the patented brain-PC
interface for developing: 1) Video games--sports, adventure, or action--that
respond to the user's concentration by improving his gameplay; 2) Measures of
focus groups' interest in ads, movies, video games, and educational software;
3) Educational software and video games that adjust to the interest level and
attention span of the user; 4) A wireless brainwave interface mounted on a
headband and operating through the SWAP or Bluetooth digital radio protocols,
which will link many common household electronic devices.
Mindwaves' U.S. Patent (#5,983,129) is simply titled "Method for Determining
an Individual's Intensity of Focused Attention and Integrating Same into
Computer Program". Mindwaves also has an International Patent Application
pending on the same claims.
During the COMDEX meeting, Dr. Cowan will be available at Circus Circus in
Las Vegas. Those interested in writing a detailed review of the Peak
Achievement Trainer may contact him at Circus Circus - 702.734.0410, or at
NeuroTechnology - 800.886.4228.
