-Caveat Lector- The Times (London) December 6 1999 WORLD SUMMARY Chinese target new spiritual group Beijing: The Chinese authorities have taken aim at a second spiritual group, similar to Falun Gong (Oliver August writes). Zhong Gong, which claims 20 million members, may have been banned without announcement, according to the Information Centre of Human Rights and Democratic Movement in China. Over the weekend, police in the central province of Shaanxi shut down the largest Zhong Gong base and dispersed about 2,000 practitioners. There were no reports of arrests, but Zhang Hongbao, the Zhong Gong founder, is under police guard, according to the human rights group. Zhong Gong combines classical Qi Gong exercises with elements of traditional Chinese culture.
