-Caveat Lector- WJPBR Email News List [EMAIL PROTECTED] Peace at any cost is a prelude to war! ********************************************* GOP Debate Wrap-Up Most importantly, let it first be said that ANY one of the six remaining GOP candidates for president who debated in Arizona Monday night would be far and away better than the “Dumb and Dumber” choice facing the Democrats. With that said: Gary Bauer continues to show why he should have dropped out months ago. Orrin Hatch exhibited a fine sense of humor, is a fine gentleman, has a lot of commendable experience, but ain’t ready for prime time. John McCain went a long way toward defining himself as a johnny-one-note on campaign finance reform - an issue upon which he is dead wrong, which is clearly a violation of constitutional free speech rights, and which is clearly boring the vast number of voters stiff. George W was not only uninspiring once again, he got caught flat-footed and unprepared on Steve Forbes’ question regarding rising oil prices. His “cute” decision to begin one question by speaking in Spanish without any relevant rhyme or reason smacked of Clinton-esque pandering. Steve Forbes made the greatest improvement over his debate performance in New Hampshire last week. He hit home runs on very tough questions regarding family leave and Fed chairman Alan Greenspan. He made Gary Bauer look foolish for even asking his “mother’s” question regarding Social Security, and his comparison to scrapping the tax code to get rid of the lobbyists with draining a swamp to get rid of the mosquitoes was a grand slam. Still, Alan Keyes was, far and away, once again, the belle of the ball. He unashamedly and unabashedly articulates the very principles of individual freedom, personal responsibility and limited government originally espoused by our Founding Fathers better than any candidate on any stage anywhere in the country. After viewing tonight’s debate, I come away with three thoughts: (1) There appears to be - and maybe this is just hope against hope - a growing sentiment that this GOP primary ain’t a done deal yet after all. (2) Many of Bush’s supporters may well be as shallow as Bush himself appears to be. I’d like to see a poll, not of the population in general, but of likely Republican voters who actually have watched these past two debates with him in them. Wonder what THOSE numbers look like. (3) Regardless of Bush’s obvious weaknesses in the debates, he retains the support of the GOP establishment, has a strong ground organization in place...and, of course, $60 million in the bank. To overcome these huge advantages, Steve Forbes - the only candidate who can match Bush’s war chest - is going to have to do something SPECTACULAR ...the political equivalent of the “Hail Mary” pass in football. Wonder what would happen if Forbes, breaking all the rules, were to convince and name Alan Keyes as his vice presidential running mate BEFORE the Iowa caucuses, rather than wait for the national convention. Hoo-hah!! Somebody go rent us a smoke-filled back room somewhere. * *********************************** Playing Chicken Haven’t seen anyone remark on the startling revelation made in Al Gore’s “60 Minutes” interview on Sunday evening that he knows how to “hypnotize” chickens. We’re skeptical. More likely he just bores them death...and Alpha Al just thinks he’s “hip-mo-tized” them. *************************************************** Guinn Chief-of-Stuff Moving Out Former Reno Republican Assemblyman and current chief-of-staff to Gov. Kenny Guinn, Pete Ernaut, announced yesterday that he was leaving the governor’s office and returning to his lucrative private consulting/advertising/lobbying business. Ernaut immediately announced that he was joining the U.S. Senate campaign of former-GOP Rep. John Ensign - a welcome sign to many who have long been concerned with, and critical of, the grassroots-challenged campaign by his Nevada handlers in last year’s dust up with Democrat Sen. Harry Reid. Ernaut is expected to bring some much-needed experience, political savvy and discipline to Ensign’s Nevada management team for next year’s contest. Although some are suggesting that Ernaut had been “forced out” by critics who didn’t think he was sufficiently committed to winning Republican control of the state Assembly next year, and had ruffled too many GOP feathers in the party flock during his short stint as the guv’s right-hand man, the Governor himself, in a prepared statement, said, “Pete has been a magnificent campaign manager, a superior chief-of-staff, and a great friend.” Guinn’s legal counsel, Scott Scherer - another former Assemblyman, an intellectual and legal heavyweight, and real straight-shooter - will replace Ernaut. Best of luck to everyone involved in their new endeavors. ********************************************* Help Spread the Word If you know someone who does not receive our FREE GOP News & Views briefings, send their e-mail address to [EMAIL PROTECTED] - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Published by: Nevada Republican Liberty Caucus “The Conscience of the Republican Party” Chuck Muth, Chairman **COPYRIGHT NOTICE** In accordance with Title 17 U.
