Clinton says FDR is person of the century

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - As far as President Clinton is concerned,
Franklin Roosevelt is the most important person of the
century for his leadership during the Great Depression and World War
II.
"If I had to pick one person, I would pick him," Clinton told a news
conference.
Clinton, an avid reader of presidential biographies, said Roosevelt
tops his list because "in this century our greatest peril was in
the Depression and World War II" and Roosevelt led the country through
them.
Roosevelt also oversaw the creation of the Social Security retirement
benefits system and looked to the future by endorsing the
United Nations and other international institutions.
Clinton said Roosevelt was also a model for how to live a fruitful
life with a crippling malady. He had polio, which left him in a
wheelchair.
"I think Roosevelt was an example to Americans of the importance of
not giving up, and of the dignity inherent in every person,"
he said.
