The police say they arrested "several" of them, but now won't give details. The local news media doesn't care. Does this make sense to you? December 2, 1999 Front page "Young people in black masks, some of them speaking on two-way radios...went on a rampage." Page A16 "...Minutes after the union and environmental groups (30,000 crowd estimate) passed through dowtown the (festive) mood changed. Shouts of "Anarchy!" "Property is Theft!" and "Close it Down!" went up, as up to 50 people unveiled hammers, spray paint, and large firecrackers known as M-80's from their backpacks. They smashed windowns of branches of virtually every retail chain, including, FAO Schwartz, Old Navy, Planet Hollywood and McDonalds... ***The violence's peak lasted about an hour, in the late afternoon, with virtually no police response...*** "We called 911 from inside our store, asking for help, letting them know that people were rampaging in the streets, but they said they were too busy,"said Maryann Swissa, who runs a jewelry store with her husband, Monty. "It seems like the police were everywhere except where the real looting was going on, and I just don't understand that," said Phil Pickens the Manager of a Planet Hollywood store on 6h Avenue. The police said they had arrested several people who they said were part of the Tuesday violence, though they offered few details on where they were from or the extent of their plans..." ============================================================ That's half of what you need to know. Here's the rest: It's now December 5 and the identities of the perpetrators of one of the most notorious crimes of recent years are still a mystery. These "up to 50" people created "over $1,000,000" worth of property damage and sparked a police riot that resulted in the meltdown of a major American city. Most mysteriously, the local Seattle news media has shown absolutely no interest in the question of who these people are and the Seattle Police Department mumbles only vague answers whenever asked. Very strange behavior for a police department that claims to have successfully apprehended members of a notorious, violent criminal gang. Very strange behavior for a local news media that has not missed a chance to cast aspersions on the integrity of the thousands of legitimate activists who came to Seattle to protest the conduct of the WTO. Now for the rest of the story: Do US government agencies, from local law enforcement on up, ever stage violent events to justify repressive measures when they want to silence dissent or amputate civil liberties? Are government employeed agents ever explicitly trained to act as rioters? West coast police departments were invited to participate. Commentary: If a dog gets into your henhouse and kills some chickens you don't sue the dog. You find the owner and deal with him. The police officers who participated in last week's terror campaign will never be punished. That's a given. If you can point to a single instance in the last 100 years of a police officer being seriously punished for engaging in violence as part of an official program to silence political dissent, I'll change my opinion. By all means sue the city of Seattle, but don't think for a moment that it will address the primary cause. Never has a case of a staged riot been so blantantly obvious and potentially easy to quickly uncover and reveal. Get hold of that thread and uncover the whole episode back to who planned the Seattle crackdown,who funded it, how local officials were paid off to go along with it, and who trained the police officers involved in military-level urban warfare terror tactics. Do that and you'll really have something.
