It was not designed as a means of blocking Serb ethnic cleansing. It was not designed as a way of waging war against the Serb and MUP forces in Kosovo in any way. There was never any intent to do that. That was not the idea. http://news2.thls.bbc.co.uk/olmedia/325000/audio/_326864_clarke.ram I'd seen this quote reported several times in the past few weeks, but it was so extraordinary and so damning that I hardly believed it could be true. It also seemed impossible that I wouldn't have heard it many months ago, since I paid close attention to events in Kosovo. But after a little digging I came across the actual RealAudio clip on the BBC's web site and heard it for myself, from the horse's mouth. The relevant quote is at 3:00. In the same clip, Clark disavows any knowledge of "Operation Horseshoe"-- so the claims of some NATO fans that NATO attacked as a result of advance knowledge of such an operation are also clearly false. It's settled once and for all, then, completely and unequivocally: NATO did not bomb Yugoslavia in order to prevent ethnic cleansing. I'm appalled that this quote wasn't given any play in the US media at the time (or since). If people had heard this during the bombing, I can only imagine the effect it would have had on public opinion. I'd encourage everyone to share this information with anyone you know who supported the bombing.
