-Caveat Lector- WJPBR Email News List [EMAIL PROTECTED] Peace at any cost is a prelude to war! ************************************************** Please! Take Me Back to Prison! Not that there’s any particular political lesson to be gained from this story, but we couldn’t help but crack a smile at the travails of two escaped inmates from a prison in southern Tanzania. According to a story in the local newspaper, the pair bolted a work farm and lit out for the nearby forest...where they soon came face-to-face with two hungry lions. Our dynamic duo scurried up a tree to safety, but the lions wouldn’t leave. They just hung out and waited patiently for dinner to come home to poppa. It wasn’t until a truck came by, scaring off the lions, that the escapees could climb back down to safety...and quickly beg the truck driver for a ride back to prison. Gotta love a happy ending, huh? ****************************************************** Cracks Appearing in Dubya’s Firewall “In the past - most recently with Bob Dole in 1996 - the hierarchical GOP has rallied to front-runners who stumbled early. Still, the McCain strategists argue, these were well-tested, well-known politicians. Mr. Bush’s candidacy, they say, rests on one asset: inevitability. Should a New Hampshire loss dash that Bush inevitability, he could tumble quickly, skeptics say. ... This, at best, is a long-shot scenario. But the fact that political professionals consider it possible is a testament to Mr. Bush’s mediocre month. He has been uninspiring and scripted at the two debates and at fund-raisers. Supporters at these events leave worried that there may be less than meets the eye.” - Columnist Al Hunt, Wall Street Journal, 12/9/99 ****************************************************** Forbes Lands Major Endorsement "Steve Forbes is head and shoulders above the others in fitting that bill [for President]. He understands the freedom and opportunity that free enterprise can provide and he is pushing to extend it by freeing Americans from the IRS, cutting back on government, and letting people make their own decisions. Forbes believes in what he says and he says it. His two main rivals, on the other hand, seem much more interested in what the news media say about them than in their own messages." - Joseph W. McQuaid, Manchester (NH) Union Leader endorsement, 12/3/99 ********************************************* Fed Tax on Big Macs? That scrumptious meal you had for Thanksgiving -- and the festive feast you're probably planning for Christmas -- may get hit with a "fat tax" if certain public health fanatics get their way, the Libertarian Party warned today. "Hide the ham, guard the gravy, and hold on to your hamburger: The calorie cops are coming after us," said Steve Dasbach, the party's national director. "If we don't stop them, the grease Gestapo will do to fatty foods what they've already done to cigarettes. In recent months, the "fat tax" -- a new federal tax that would be levied against high-calorie and high-fat foods -- has been endorsed by several organizations as a solution to a national "obesity epidemic." "Using language strikingly similar to the anti-tobacco jihad, the Calorie KGB is demanding that the government launch a war against fatty foods -- for our own good, of course," said Dasbach. "They want to put a sin tax on food, while fattening the federal coffers." - Libertarian Party news release, 12/8/99 ********************************************************** Are Nevada Taxpayers Being “Set Up?” A day after announcing he was leaving his post as GOP Gov. Kenny Guinn’s chief-of-staff, former “moderate” Assemblyman Pete Ernaut addressed a legislative committee and fired what may end up being the first shot of a coming tax war in the 2001 Legislature. Unfortunately, it appears Ernaut’s remarks were intended to begin preparing the electorate for a tax HIKE - not a tax cut (uh-oh). He warned that an on-going review of the state’s financial “needs” indicates that higher government spending is inevitable (isn’t it always?) and that existing gaming and sales taxes won’t keep up (naturally). As reported in Thursday’s Las Vegas Review Journal: “The fundamental review of the budget is intended to show the public that the state is spending wisely the money it already has, so if new revenues are needed, taxpayers will be confident that a tax increase is justified, Ernaut said.” OK, show of hands. How many of you agree with Mr. Ernaut that we’re not paying enough in taxes? (Not counting you, Sen. Titus.) Beware of Ernaut’s trial balloon folks. It looks as if we’re being “set up” for a “justified” tax hike of some sort next year by this “fundamental review of the budget.” Grab your wallets...and think very, very carefully before voting for your state Senator and state Assemblyman next November 7. Electing the wrong candidates could be hazardous to your wealth. *************************************************** Help Spread the Word If you know someone who does not receive our FREE GOP News & Views briefings, send their e-mail address to [EMAIL PROTECTED] - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Published by: Nevada Republican Liberty Caucus “The Conscience of the Republican Party” Chuck Muth, Chairman **COPYRIGHT NOTICE** In accordance with Title 17 U.
