MCAULIFFE'S MILLIONS: CLINTON'S TOP FUND-RAISER MADE PILES OF
CASH FOR HIMSELF
Clinton's closest and most loyal Washington friend, Terry
McAuliffe, has raised more than $275 million for Clinton's
causes, Jeff Gerth [he's back!] reports in Sunday editions of the
NY TIMES. Along the way, he's made millions of dollars for
himself, too!
According to publishing sources, Gerth is set to unleash a
fascinating 4,000-word profile of McAuliffe -- a profile which
reveals how the fund-raiser has quietly built a personal stash of
major cash!
McAuliffe has spawned "a web of business deals, from
telecommunications to real estate" that McAuliffe keeps far from
the public spotlight, reports Gerth.
"His business confederation, a veritable McAuliffe Inc., has
generated tens of millions of dollars, but McAuliffe keeps his
affairs so private that he does not even have a business listing
in the Washington telephone directory."
Gerth claims: "McAuliffe has transformed the art of raising money
for public figures into the art of raising money for himself,
leveraging a personal fortune from his political fund-raising
contacts."
McAuliffe tells Gerth that he uses his influence to get people
together with President Clinton or to recommend them for
presidential appointments. McAuliffe says that he never ever
discusses substantive issues with the president or tries to lobby
him.
Although the capital is ground zero of both his fund-raising and
business dealings, McAuliffe does not even have his very own
Washington office!
When he is in town, he conducts most of his business at
restaurants like the Palm and the Oval Room.
Gerth interviews McAuliffe at both.
Gerth: "McAuliffe, 42, sits on 10 corporate boards, none of them
public companies. He travels to Africa and Asia, where he meets
with heads of state. He's trying to buy six companies, in areas
like telecommunications. He is an active stock trader. He speaks
and plays golf regularly with his best friend, Clinton."
