But what the radicals don't want exposed is evidence that they collaborated secretly with U.S. Republicans going back to 1980. The fundamentalists are especially threatened by newly available information that the Reagan-Bush campaign negotiated behind President Carter's back in 1980 to thwart the release of 52 U.S. hostages, the so-called October Surprise caper. Yet, with Iran's radicals and moderates battling again, it is the Clinton administration that ironically is helping the radicals by protecting their alleged secret ties to the United States. The administration continues to rebuff offers of evidence that could reveal the Islamic radicals as hypocrites and the Reagan-Bush campaign as possibly worse. According to a new "Fact Finder" report at Consortiumnews.com, President Clinton secretly has rejected offers of October Surprise evidence from Iran since shortly after his election in 1992. A source close to the administration also says the White House turned down a chance to examine relevant Stasi files now in the hands of the German government. Then, in August, Clinton's Justice Department objected to the unsealing of a federal court file that reportedly outlined a 1980 Republican-Iranian overture brokered through the Palestine Liberation Organization.
