EDITOR'S NOTE: Due to a misalignment of stars and planets, production of
the SkeptiNews bulletins will be interrupted further for a couple weeks.

Notice that 1/1/2000 does NOT mark a change of millennium, except in the
minds of the innumerate -- since our arbitrary date-keeping system has no
Year Zero, the new century/millennium/aeon starts on 1/1/2001. [And other
calendars have passed many millennial marks already, with no apparent long-
term ill effects.] But we may view year CE 2000 as an interregnum, a year
of passage betwixt the 2nd and 3rd millennia of the Xian era.
It's a good excuse for a year-long party -- start celebrating 31/12/1999,
continue through 1/1/2001, pausing only to catch one's breath, then plunge
back into the fest. Shout 'Farewell' to seasons of slaughter, of hatred,
of despoliation & fear & credulity & manipulation. Bid 'Welcome' to an era
of... what? More of the same? Oblivion? Mystical transformation? Hard-
headed rebuilding of human societies, physiologies, mentalities? Muddling
along thru endless boom-bust cycles? A leap off our planet, expansion out
into the universe? World conquest by brain-eating aliens, by flesh-eating
bacteria, by politico-corporate fascists, by rational pacifists? What are
we really celebrating? What are our possibilities? What's to cheer about?
Your Editor will pause briefly from such big-picture considerations, being
immersed instead in smaller, personal parodoxi: self & others, sun belt &
ice belt, music & deafness, loss & gain. Outcomes of these interactions
may appear at the http://i.am/nutz website in early January -- unless some
