Subject: [LIFE-GAZETTE] Dr. X's Files: Paranormal Phenomena...or "Miracles".

>Dear Centre For The Scientific Investigation of the Paranormal:
>
> Further to the invitation on your web site to "ask the answer man", let me
ask a few questions to help you and The Wizard (JR) adjust to (scientific)
reality:
>
> It is very scientific to give definitions, don't you agree? Now, JR
thinks that this is just "semantics" but any bona fide scientist is very
careful about definitions. Let us define phenomena considered to be
"paranormal" and then ask if such phenomena happen in reality.
>
>What if something (anything) can be both here and there at the same time?
Sometimes the term "bi-location" is used. I think there are anecdotes of
Padre Pio being seen at two places at the same time.
>I'm not going to deal with whether this particular case is valid or not. I
just present it as an example of what you might deal with in field
observations of X Files. Bi-location is a paranormal phenomenon. Do you have
any sound reason for saying that a large object which allegedly bi-locates
fits the definition of a paranormal phenomena to be proved or disproved
while a small object which bilocates is not a paranormal phenomenon?
> Obviously the reason I mention this is that quantum effects include
bi-location as in the Two Slit Experiment. See
http://users.uniserve.com/~culturex/Machine-Psychology.htm Chapter 10,
"Robotwilightzone". The standard interpretation of this experiment by (very
scientific) physicists is that when the second slit is opened the SAME
particle acts as if it is going through both slits at the same time. If it
is not both here and there at the same time, what then is another
explanation for the results?
>Furthermore, do you know any reason why such quantum effects could not
occur with larger physical units? For example at
http://www.quantum.univie.ac.at/research/c60 we are told about laboratory
demonstrated quantum effects with molecules. At the theory level, the Oxford
Centre for Quantum Computation, http://www.qubit.org/ talks about a
"...Multiverse, which contains many universes like ours, interacting through
quantum interference". (By the way, I think the "Spooky Agent" Fox Mulder
from TV X Files was said to have been educated in psych/parapsych at
Oxford).
>
>Now I can go on to other paranormal phenomena to help cure your "adjustment
disorder" but I want to see if you can accept reasoning with this one
example before I waste my time. You will be much better off if you accept
the scientific realities of this world. I refer to James Randi's "naive
rationalism" and pseudo-science repeatedly in Machine Psychology. He is
prejudiced, ie he pre-judges what can and cannot happen in nature...and that
is NOT SOUND SCIENCE. When I designed and taught SS205, Parapsychology, at
Douglas College I presented it as the scientific investigation of the
paranormal. I didn't have a prejudice for or against any alleged paranormal
phenomenon. What I taught first was that there are many mysteries in nature,
mysteries which will expectedly go on without known limit. We then let
nature tell us what is and is not reality. By the way, when Life Gazette was
a tabloid, I wrote under the pen name of Dr. X and that was years before the
TV X Files so I can lay claim to my own X Files. These X Files may help you
to deal with scientific reality but first you need an "attitude adjustment".
The attitude required is one of honest acceptance of what reality tells you
reality is. Are you willing to make such a "leap of faith" beyond your
present dogmatic naive rationalism?
>Sincerely-FWP.
