# Ultra-Orthodox rabbis ban Net use. JERUSALEM (AP) - Leading ultra-Orthodox
Jewish rabbis have banned their followers from using the Internet out of
concern Web links may lead them into the profane. The ban was initiated by
leaders of the influential Belz Hasidic sect in October & in recent weeks
has been endorsed by the leader of virtually every ultra-Orthodox Jewish
sect. "The rabbis met recently and started off with the proposition that
they ban computers." That was going too far, they decided - computers have
proved valuable in teaching the Bible and in running businesses. But the
Internet, with its proliferation of links to pornography sites, was ruled
  taboo. http://www.infobeat.com/stories/cgi/story.cgi?id=2563164573-d62

: Is your belief system disconnected? Will you be irrelevant to the modern
world, quickly fading into oblivion? Should all belief systems fade away??

# Russia’s Leader a KGB Spy Turned Religious. Did Vladimir Putin find God,
or just a better job? The new Russian interim prez was expelled from West
Germany as a Soviet spy in the late '70s, during the heat of the Cold War.
Today, this once-cold-blooded spy is warmly advocating "Christian ideals"
  in his new Russia. http://www.newsmax.com/articles/?a=2000/1/9/65403

: Are you a political leader? Were you elected, appointed, installed? Are
you religious? Really? Have you ever been a spy? How's your job security??

# Religious vigilantes nabbed in Iraq. BAGHDAD (AP) Iraqi cops have busted a
group of religious vigilantes who stalked & killed 19 men who were with
their girlfriends at a tree-lined esplanade frequented by lovers. The
killings started in October when a college student was slain as he chatted
with his girlfriend. The killers approached the victim & fired one bullet
in his head. The woman was not harmed. Police didn't publicize the killing
and other lovers continued to visit the promenade along the Tigris River
in northern Baghdad. At least 18 more men were killed in a similar fashion
before police launched an undercover operation. The killers apparently saw
themselves as Islamic vigilantes offended by the lovers' actions. Allah
  wills it: http://www.infobeat.com/stories/cgi/story.cgi?id=2563157479-cda

: Does your belief system promote assassinating chatty lovers? Do you chat?
Should you be killed? Do your deities appreciate the harvest of fresh souls?

@ Fatima UFO-Like Apparitions Of 1917 Examined. In 1917 there occurred at a
rural spot of Portugal, Cova da Iria, near the village of FATIMA, a series
of paranormal/religious events which turned to be spread & accepted around
the catholic world as "apparitions of the Virgin Mary". Among ufologists
on the other hand, there are many who feel that the events at FATIMA may
have a close and familiar ufological perspective, related to modern
  "unidentified aerial phenomena". http://sightings.com/ufo6/fatimaufo.htm

: Have you seen any deities/demons/angels/aliens lately? What's the
differ-ence between a divine apparition and an alien visitation? How can you
tell?

# Security tighter at holy sites. JERUSALEM (AP) Cops beefed up security at
Jerusalem holy sites that millions of pilgrims are expected to visit this
year to celebrate the 2000th anniversary of Jesus' birth. Well, da 2004th,
prob'ly. Police will install a network of surveillance cameras throughout
Jerusalem's walled Old City where the Church of the Holy Sepulcher is loc-
ated. One cop shop was set up near the church where tradition says Jesus
was crucified, buried and resurrected; and another near the Garden of
Gethsemane on the Mount of Olives, where Judas betrayed him to the Romans.
The police presence at the sites is intended to help ensure the safety of
pilgrims during the millennial year. Israeli tourism officials anticipate
3 million visitors here this year, mostly pilgrims coming to mark the year
  2000. http://www.infobeat.com/stories/cgi/story.cgi?id=2563161720-ef9

: What's your favorite millennial event? Can you count to 2004? Do you plan
to bomb any millennial stuff? Is heightened security just a tasty challenge?

# NAZ PROCESSION IN MANILA DRAWS THOUSANDS. Just a touch is said to carry
miraculous powers - and the prospect of getting close to the life-size
statue of Jesus, known as the Black Nazarene, is what attracted believers
to Saint John the Baptist Church in the Philippines on Sunday. Thousands
of barefoot devotees joined the annual procession carrying the 200-year-
old statue from the church thru congested downtown Manila during the Feast
of the Black Nazarene. Police and volunteer marshals guarded the process:
