Orlin Grabbe</A> ----- Political Corruption Israel's President to Quit in Cash Scandal Those French millionaires come in handy. PRESIDENT Ezer Weizman of Israel appeared last night to be preparing the way to resign over a scandal in which he has admitted receiving more than £100,000 from a French millionaire. Israeli Radio said Mr Weizman's lawyers had offered a deal to the Attorney-General, Eliakim Rubinstein, under which he would resign so long as there was no criminal investigation. The attorney-general denied that they were discussing a plea bargain, but there was little doubt among politicians that discussions were taking place for as dignified an exit as possible. Mr Weizman, 75, an RAF pilot during the Second World War, is known for his outspokenness. Many Israelis have been shocked that a man who seemed to personify the unpolished virtues of the Israeli armed forces should quietly have pocketed an extra salary. The payments stopped when he became president in 1993, though his lawyers admit he continued to dip into the funds. Mr Weizman's legal team has admitted that he received £125,000 from Edward Sarousi, a Monaco-based businessman. The president has denied doing anything wrong, saying the money came from a friend and was not a bribe. But he is in poor health, and may use this as a basis for stepping down. The London Telegraph, Jan. 13, 2000 Department of Injustice Janet "Shakes" Reno: "I Be Da Law!" Go away little boy. A FLORIDA state judge had no legal right to interfere in the case of a six-year-old Cuban boy at the centre of a custody battle, Janet Reno, the American Attorney-General, said yesterday. Miss Reno said Judge Rosa Rodriguez acted outside her jurisdiction in ruling last Monday that Elian Gonzalez should stay in America until a full hearing of his case in her Miami court on March 6. Whether the boy stayed or returned to his father in Cuba was a matter of federal law and that her department would entertain only a federal court challenge to their decision to send him back, she said. She told lawyers representing the great-uncle of the boy, who has temporary custody of him in Miami: "The Florida court's order has no force or effect insofar as [our] administration of the immigration laws is concerned." She said there were still plans to return the boy, who survived when a refugee boat sank last November killing his mother and stepfather. His father, Juan Miguel, has claimed Elian, and is backed by Cuba. Last week the US Immigration and Naturalisation Service ruled that the boy should return to Cuba, sparking protests by Cuban exiles in Florida. Judge Rodriguez has already courted controversy because she failed to disclose that in her last campaign to be elected a state judge, she had paid the political lobbyist who is now spokesman for Elian's Miami relatives. She said yesterday there was no conflict of interest. Elian is still subject to a subpoena by a committee of the House of Representatives in Washington which supersedes the INS ruling and is likely to keep him in America until at least mid-February.
