I've never figured out the problem. I think they changed chefs too. The
Travel Office people work at the pleasure of the president (and probably his
wife as well; I know Nancy R had a lot of push around there). Billy Dale had
been under investigation through several administrations, because of his
habit of taking the funds home and putting them in his personal account. No
one wanted to do the ugly job of firing him, because the press loved him. He
gave them wonderful perks, and they really appreciated it. Clinton's years
in the White House would probably have been very different had he not given
Billy Dale the boot. They're still getting even. If there's any sign they
should hang on that "bridge to the 2lst century," it's one reading, "Don't
p___ off the press." I don't know who finally cleaned out the White House
Travel Office, but it would have happened two administrations before, if
anyone had had the nerve to act. Prudy
