I can offer my two cents worth here - several years ago, at the height of
the American posturing against Libya over the (alleged) chemical weapons
factory at Rabta, I journeyed with several politicians and another
journalist to Libya.
After some interesting side-adventures, we eventually were driven out to
a camp just outside the gates to the Rabta buildings.
There was certainly NOT an operation plant of any kind operating there,
much less a chemical weapons plant. The Americans claimed that the plant
was in operation and cited some satellite photos of two dead dogs in the
desert nearby as part of their evidence. They also claimed to have
busted a business deal with some German firm to supply various chemicals.
The buildings we saw did not even have a roof, there was no glass in any
windows, dirt road access, no perimeter fences or security etc etc. And
yet based on the repeated assertions that there was an active plant
there, the Americans had an aircraft carrier and were talking in the
western media about airstrikes, possibly followed by a landing. Needless
to say many European nations were quite dismayed, and at the time there
was a steady stream of western politicians, journalists and various VIPs,
all being flown to Libya, and shown the complex.
Interestingly, the Americans have gone totally silent on the plant ever
since. Further, I have detected no other mention in any other western
media I receive at our offices. I personally believe it was a beat up
that failed in gaining other western nations' support. I believe it was
all oil politics at the time.
Well, maybe that was 5 cents worth. You decide.
