Doesn't this go back to the maxim that 'the business of America is business' ?
Just check out your JC Penney catalog and go to the shoe/boot section (just one
instance) and see how many items for selection have been manufactured in China.
Or, go to Walmart ("Buy American") and check the labels of the inexpensive
stuff that will reveal the same source. Or, just check out the (im)balance of
trade and see where all the money is owed. The key is, I believe, to open the
gates to the Chinese so there can be reverse trade -- just like in some of the
other Asian countries (Japan, Korea, e.g.) where we have been successful in
having trade go both ways. Of course, this last statement is somewhat tongue-
in-cheek as there hasn't been much success in the 'both ways' approach --
except maybe in tobacco products.

This is what Buchanan rails against -- overreliance on our 'allies' for basic
items (clothing and other manufactured goods that are needed on a daily basis).
My view of the thrust to engage China is to reverse this reliance back to them
wherein they will need to buy American to (a) flatten out the balance of
payments and (b) shift their reliance on our abilities. But, we have to be
careful not to let things go the way of the television and VCR markets and just
give the industries away. A<>E<>R
