-Caveat Lector- -Cui Bono?- My Aunt Emma Early, late, of Raleigh, NC, was about 4 feet tall, pretty much blind, and lived alone in the Mordecai section of old Raleigh. In the summer of her (i think) 73rd year, she was visited by an unruly type that came through her parlor window whilst she was inhabiting same. Lokking the intruder in the eye, she shrieked for him to leave. He didn't and continued his ingress. She ran, as well as a 73 year old can, down the hall. She had, by her account, a pistol in one bedroom and a phone in another. She chose wisely the room with the pistol. According to her, you can fake a phone better than a pistol. She locked the door behind her, retrived her pistol, an old, worn .38, and proceeded to fake a 911 call as the intruder attempted to force the door. It is important to note here that house was at least as old as she and that the door knob level suited her diminutive stature. They were, how do I say this, right at "pubic" level on a six foot man. Well, the fake 911 call did not have the desired effect and our miscreant continued to force the door over her repeated warnings of being on the phone to the police and her having a gun and knowing full well how to use it. After a bit, enough became enough and she fired once through the door. The intruder left. Now this was being recounted to me some days later and she was pretty much acting out what was done when and how. I asked her if the authorities corralled the intruder and she replied that they should have had an easy time of it. She pointed out the bullet hole left by trusty .38. It was right beside the doorknob. Ouch. Don't let anyone sell you that bollocks about "junk guns." A "junk gun" saved my Aunt Emma's life. West Palm Beach, Florida, jewel store owner Art Samuels was on his way to lunch when he noticed a badly bleeding man rushing out of a store. Samuel ran to the aid of the victim, and a few seconds later an assailant exited the store swinging a pair of nunchakus. "He lunged and came toward me," Samuels said. pulled out my gun." A retired U.S. Navy commander, Samuels has a conceal' weapons permit for his .40 Glock with. laser sight. Just the sight of it was enough to make the criminal hit the deck, where he stayed until police arrived. (The Sun Sentinel, Fort Lauderdale, FL, 5/8/94) After seeing her 87-year-old husband beaten during a holdup at their north Philadelphia liquor store three weeks previous, Jacqueline Arnao, 78, vowed not to let it happen again. So when three masked men, one brandishing a shotgun, burst into the store, Mrs. Arnao reached for her .38. Firing once, she set the trio running for the door. Mrs. Arnao promised to use the pistol again if need be: "I'm going to go and learn how to shoot it properly so I can get him next time." (The Inquirer, Philadelphia, PA, 4/30/94) It was a hot night in Sacramento, so 80-year-old Lillian Carlson left her porch door open when she went to bed. This provided easy access for an intruder, who appeared in the bedroom. Carlson reached for the gun she has kept in her night stand for 50 years, aimed it at her unwelcome guest, and said, "You can live or die. Which is it going to be?" The culprit walked out and walked back in. Two shots from Carlson's antique revolver convinced him to leave for good. Police arrested a wounded suspect the next morning. (The Bee, Sacramento, CA, 7/12/94) "I probably wouldn't have gone out there without a gun," says John Gutt of Union Mills, Indiana. Gutt heard two bloodcurdling screams in the early morning outside his rural home. While his daughter called 911, he armed himself and went to investigate, clad only in sweatpants. When he heard another scream and a woman's voice saying, He's got a gun," Gutt followed the voice to a field, where he found a man on top of a partially clad woman. The would-he rapist ran off, and Gutt escorted the woman to his home. Once police arrived, he helped hunt down the culprit. Gutt later received a public service award for his actions. (The Herald Argus, LaPorte, IN, 7/14/94) Wheelchair-bound jeweler Scott Moline was alone in his West Allis, Wisconsin, store when two customers-turned-bandits charged behind the counter. As one of the attackers drew a gun, Moline instinctively pulled his own .38 and loosed three shots. Though he missed the suspects. the pair were so frightened by Moline's defense that they fled the store, leaving behind their own gun and their stolen get-away car park out front. Police arrested the two shortly after the incident. (The Star, West Allis, WI, 5/23/96) Two masked men armed with knives, duct tape, and a can of gasoline attacked three women in their home yesterday; a mother and her two adult daughters, one of whom is scheduled to testify in a trial. After a violent hand-to-hand fight in which all three women were injured, the mother got her handgun, and shot and wounded one of the assailants. He ran, but was later captured by the police. The other attacker escaped. The DA's office is now considering charges against the mother for possessing a gun, which is illegal in DC. "Somewhere along the line I made one of my stupidest decisions... I was afraid that ...if ...somebody caught me with the gun in my purse, I could lose my license to practice, lose my ability to make a living. So I took the gun out of my purse and I left it in my car ...which the laws in my state are kinda wishy- washy on ...and I thought, 'Heck, if I needed it, it's probably going to be when I'm out on the road ...in the middle of nowhere and, you know, my car's broke down or something ..." "Everybody in here knows, I think, what happened in Luby's .. but, in a nutshell ...uh ...ya know, we all think ...and I know you do ..(indicating a committee member), we all think that crime happens when you're walking down a dark alley... I've never been involved in any crimes ...that's never happened in my life ... I was with my parents ..AT NOON, on a bright sunny day, in Luby's, with a hundred and forty other people, OK. In a town that's not a high crime town." "This guy .... drives through the window .... and starts shooting ..This guy has got no history ...nothing." "Well, my father and I immediatly put the table up in front of us and we all got down behind it, and I ...ya know your first opinion is ...is this guy robbing this place ..what's the deal ...what's ...what's going on, and then you're realizing that all he's doing is simply shooting people." "As he was working his way toward us, I reached for my purse, thinking ..Hah! ...I've got this son of a gun ... OK? Now, understand, I know what a lot of people think, ...they think, ... 'Oh, my God, then you would have had a gunfight and then more people would have been killed.' Unhunh, no, ...I was down on the floor ...this guy is standing up ..everybody else is down on the floor ...I had a perfect shot at him ..it would have been clear, I had a place to prop my hand ...the guy was not even aware of what we were doing ...I'm not saying that I could have saved anybody in there, but I would have had a chance ...that's all I'm saying is that I would have had a chance ..." "My gun wasn't even in my purse ...it was a hundred feet away in my car!" "My father was saying, 'I gotta do something!, I gotta do something! This guy's going to kill everyone in here!' So I wasn't able to hold him down and when my father thought he had a chance ..he went at the guy! The guy turned, shot him in the chest and my dad went down." "Shortly ...it made the guy change directions and he went off to my left. Shortly after that somebody broke out a window in back and I saw a chance to get out ...I grabbed my mother and tried to get her up ...hoped she was following me ...and I grew wings on my feet. As it turned out, my mother crawled over to my father and stayed with him ...and this ...I'm trying to think of a civil word to use ...this person ...uh ...eventually came around and shot her also ...OK" "Let me make a point here, in case this isn't becoming extremely clear. My state has gun control laws. It did not keep Hennard from coming in and killing everybody! What it did do, was keep me from protecting my family! That's the only thing that cotton pickin' law did! OK! Understand that! That's ...that's so important!" -- www.ctrl.org DECLARATION & DISCLAIMER ========== CTRL is a discussion & informational exchange list.
