Eastern Poland was part of the heavily Jewish "Pale of Settlement".
Deporting Jews to "little villages in the middle of nowhere" in eastern
Poland would be very logical. It would be returning them to their
actual "homeland". ("Israel" as a "Jewish homeland" was a fantasy
dreamed up by Zionist rabbis in the latter part of the nineteenth or
early twentieth century.)
