IDF Sgt. Tzachi Itach, was killed last Friday by a Hizbullah-fired anti-tank missile and two other soldiers were wounded -- one seriously. Western intelligence sources quoted in the London Sunday Telegraph report that the recent upsurge in Hizbullah attacks was "facilitated by a large Iranian shipment of weapons to south Lebanon for the purpose of sabotaging the Israeli-Syrian peace talks..." As of last week, Israeli security officials were able to identify weapons used by Hizbullah as being among the "Irangate" shipment delivered to Teheran via Israel in the mid-1980s as part of an illegal arms-for-hostages deal. Despite current hostilities, Prime Minister Ehud Barak is publicly stating that a framework deal is still his priority but that a workable framework must have "deep flexibility" on both sides. According to reports Barak has been under pressure to put the Syrian talks on the back burner for now due to the ongoing fighting in Lebanon, focusing instead on the Palestinian talks. ************************ Global Warming Two assertions are constantly made in the public media about global warming: (1) It is an indisputable "fact" -- the consensus of the world's scientists and (2) it is caused by human activity, notably by the introduction of manmade greenhouse gases into the atmosphere over the last century and a half. At best the temperature has risen one-half degree Celsius, well within historical norms over the last one thousand years. Although the existence of global warming is still in dispute -- to date over 18,000 scientists have publicly challenged global warming assertions -- there is mounting scientific evidence that whatever warming could be occurring is not be the result of human action. Research published in Nature magazine indicates that changes in earth's temperatures could be linked to changes in the Sun's magnetic field. "Research suggests that the magnetic flux from the Sun more than doubled this century. As solar magnetism is closely linked with sunspot activity and the strength of sunlight reaching Earth, the increase could have produced warming in the global climate." The scientists cite evidence that the interplanetary magnetic field has increased 40% since 1964, suggesting a magnetic field 2.3 times greater than it was in 1901. Global warming is of significance because radical changes in the economies and lifestyles of the world are being proposed to deal with the "fact" of the global warming "crisis."
