DECLARATION OF THE CANADIAN ORTHODOX CHURCH

As Archbishop of The Canadian Orthodox Church and the Archdiocese of
the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, Patriarchate of Kiev, in Canada, I wish
to issue the following official declaration:
I wish to express our unbounded horror at the ongoing act of
premeditated genocide being carried out against the innocent civilian
population of Iraq by the Government of the United States of America
and its willing accomplices in the Canadian Government.
We are deeply ashamed of the complicity of the Canadian Government in
premeditated and well planned war crimes against the innocent civilian
population of Iraq, and the on going genocide against this suffering
civilian population. The unconscionable and cynical self-justification
which has been offered by the culprits in these undoubted crimes
against humanity only make the offence more odious.
Further, we condemn in the strongest terms, the Government of the
United States of America for having used depleted uranium, a substance
well known for its long term toxic and cancer-causing properties, as a
weapon of premeditated genocide against the civilian population in
Iraq, especially in the area of Basra. I suggest that the difference
between the American use of depleted uranium as a weapon against an
innocent civilian population differs from Sadam Hussein's use of other
forms of toxic chemicals in warfare only in degree, not in kind.
We further accuse the Government of the United States and its
compliant agents in the Government of Canada with full culpability in
crimes against humanity for the ongoing daily deaths of around five
hundred children a day in Iraq and the huge toll of death and
suffering by the entire civilian population of Iraq.
We call upon Canada as a sovereign state, to take its own decision and
end the non-military, non-strategic sanctions against the civilian
population of Iraq, while continuing every non-criminal effort to
bring about an end to the fascist regime of Sadam Hussein. Both the
bombing of a civilian population with depleted uranium and the ongoing
genocidal non-military sanctions against Iraq imitate rather than
defame Sadam Hussein. We call upon the Canadian Government to
immediately institute direct medical aid to those suffering the
results of American poisoning with Canadian depleted uranium, if not
from pure humanitarian motives then perhaps as a means of atoning for
what is clearly a war crime and crime against humanity.
