FBI Lennon file release breaks security
                  protocol

BY MICHAEL EVANS AND GRACE BRADBERRY
                 AN AMERICAN court's decision to
release classified British documents relating to
John Lennon is threatening to undermine an
 intelligence-sharing arrangement between the US
and Britain, government sources said yesterday.

The British Government has told the US that it
wants MI5 documents on the late Beatle to remain secret.
The documents are held by the FBI.

Last Friday Judge Brian Robbins ordered the release of
three documents from FBI files. They include two letters
from the British authorities and notes of a telephone
conversation between London and Washington on the
Government's desire to keep secret the intelligence
information on some of Lennon's interests and activities.

MI5 is believed to have accumulated a file on Lennon
because of his support for the Irish republican cause and
suspected funding of the Trotskyist Workers' Revolutionary
Party. MI5 reportedly passed material to the FBI in the early
1970s when Lennon moved to the US. He was shot dead in
 New York in 1980.

The Los Angeles judge ruled that Jon Wiener, a Californian
professor who has been campaigning for the release of all the
FBI files on Lennon, should be allowed to see the three
 documents.

While neither the documents nor the material from the MI5
file sent to the FBI are thought to contain any notable
revelations, the Government wants the contents to remain
classified in accordance with its traditional custom of keeping
 intelligence reports secret.

Under an arrangement between Britain and the US, the
American authorities are not allowed to release any material
sent to them by MI5 or MI6 without permission from the
 Government.

The ruling by Judge Robbins, following the petition from
Professor Wiener, put this arrangement at risk, the
government sources said. The US authorities have 28 days in
which to lodge an appeal against the judge's ruling.
