-Caveat Lector- -Cui Bono?- =========================== The Committee for National Solidarity Tolstojeva 34, 11000 Belgrade, YU February 9, 2000 11 TIMES MORE TERRORIST ATTACKS ON CITIZENS IN KOSOVO SINCE KFOR ARRIVAL Belgrade, 9 Feb (Tanjug) -- The ethnic Albanian terrorism, continually present in the territory of Serbia's southern Kosovo and Metohija province for a number of years, escalated during 1998 and early in 1999 with brutal and unscrupulous murders, kidnappings and harassment of innocent civilians -- women, children and old people, and with intensive terrorist attacks on the facilities and members of the Serbian Interior Ministry, two police officers have said. The latest issue of the Serbian police magazine Bezbednost (Security) carried a report by Milos Nedeljkovic and Mile Novakovic in a text entitled "Terrorism of Ethnic Albanian Separatists in Kosovo and Metohija and Methods of Their Actions." Nedeljkovic and Novakovic said that in 1998 alone there were 14 times more terrorist attacks than in the previous seven-year period (1991-1997). They added that the ethnic Albanian terrorism culminated ahead of the NATO aggression on Yugoslavia, especially after the arrival of KFOR [Kosovo Force] in Kosovo and Metohija. Since the arrival of KFOR in Serbia's southern province, daily there were 11 times more terrorist attacks on citizens than during 1998 and 1999 (before 10 June), when the Serbian police was in charge of security in this region. In 1998 and until the arrival of KFOR, the ethnic Albanian terrorists of the so-called KLA [Kosovo Liberation Army -- UCK in Albanian] committed 1,110 terrorist attacks on citizens, or an average 2.1 attack each day, while since the deployment of KFOR there were 2,564 terrorist attacks, an average 23.1 per day. Nedeljkovic and Novakovic said that in the 10 June-28 September 1999 period, armed terrorist gangs of the so-called KLA were responsible for 2,564 attacks out of the total of 2,599. In these attacks, killed were 267 people (216 Serbs and Montenegrins, 47 ethnic Albanians and four members of other nationalities) and 348 were wounded. The ethnic Albanian terrorists also targeted Serb cultural and historic monuments. Between 13 June-18 September 1999, ethnic Albanian terrorists damaged or destroyed over 60 Serb orthodox churches and monasteries in the territory of Kosovo and Metohija. The ethnic Albanian terrorists also carried out attacks and shelled refugee settlements (Babaloch, Podujevo, etc) and killed, kidnapped, and abused refugees under UN protection. The ethnic Albanian terrorists targeted the employees of public services and social firms, and prominent businessmen owners of private companies. In 1998, 89 terrorist attacks were carried out in Kosovo and Metohija against 190 employees of public services and firms, mainly workers of the Serbian Electric Power Company, the Serbia Sume forestry firm and the PTT. According to the authors, the favorite method of the ethnic Albanian terrorists are abductions of Serb citizens and ethnic Albanians loyal to the Republic of Serbia and the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. Between 1 January-31 December 1998, the ethnic Albanian terrorists kidnapped 293 inhabitants of Kosovo and Metohija. Of this figure, 173 were Serbs and Montenegrins, 101 ethnic Albanians, 14 Romanies, one Macedonian, Muslim, and Bulgarian each and two persons of other nationalities. The kidnapped persons included 54 women and 14 underage persons, of whom six children. Of the total number of abducted, 31 were killed, 110 released, nine escaped from ethnic Albanian imprisonment, while the fate of 143 citizens remains unknown. The kidnappings, harassment and killing of the kidnapped citizens were also often a method employed by the terrorist activities of the ethnic Albanian gangs in 1999, especially after the arrival of KFOR. >From 1 January- 28 September 1999, the ethnic Albanian terrorists kidnapped 557 persons -- mainly Serbs and Montenegrins (420) and ethnic Albanians (87). All attacks and kidnappings were carried out before the eyes of KFOR and UNMIK [UN Interim Administration Mission in Kosovo], who did nothing or practically nothing to prevent these forms of terrorist activities, or to find and liberate those who were abducted.
