-Caveat Lector- *** U.S. to support peace in E. Timor AUCKLAND, New Zealand (AP) - The United States is offering "hundreds, not thousands" of American forces to participate in the international force to restore order in battered East Timor, the Clinton administration said Monday. National Security Adviser Sandy Berger also said the Indonesian military, accused by President Clinton of contributing to the violence in the former Portuguese colony, may wind up patrolling side by side with foreign peacekeepers. Berger said the U.S. contribution to the peacekeeping force would involve small numbers of personnel, and suggested some may go there in a matter of days. Earlier, Clinton told reporters the United States would supply planes and pilots for an airlift and help with logistics, communications and intelligence. The report raised questions about federal agents' insistence that they fired no shots. Twelve .308-caliber casings and two dozen Israeli-manufactured .223-caliber casings were recovered from a house used by the FBI's Hostage Rescue Team during the 51-day siege, the Rangers said in a report provided to Congress. In an account the FBI has since said was wrong, an FBI agent initially reported hearing shots fired from that house on the siege's final day. The FBI, which has insisted for six years that its agents didn't fire a single shot during the standoff, refused comment Monday. "This man has written how he sees himself after this murder," Jasper County District Attorney Guy James Gray said as trial for Lawrence Russell Brewer got under way. "He sees himself as a hero, a star, that he's really accomplished. It's really a kind of weird mind-set." Brewer, 32, is the second of three white men charged with killing James Byrd Jr., 49, by dragging him behind a pickup truck. Shawn Allen Berry, 24, already has been convicted and sentenced to death in the June 1998 killing. John William King, also 24, is awaiting trail. The previously classified operation has already netted more than 6 tons of cocaine and led to arrests of 13 accused smugglers. The operation netted a record 53 tons of cocaine in the last year. Officials say the sharpshooters pose no risk to fisherman or pleasure boaters in the Caribbean, where helicopters have stopped three boats in the last month. The operation uses MH90 Enforcer helicopters leased commercially and specially equipped by the Coast Guard. Crews use nonlethal force to warn the boats and, if necessary, disable their engines with gunfire.
