-Caveat Lector- ROME (AP) - Amintore Fanfani, a six-time Italian premier and a former head of the U.N. General Assembly, died Saturday. He was 91. Fanfani's high-profile involvement in Italian politics covered half a century, starting at the end of World War II when he joined the Christian Democrats, the party that would lead Italy until the 1990s. Fanfani pushed through laws for workers' housing as labor minister and served as agriculture minister, interior minister and foreign minister. In 1954, he became head of the government for the first time, only to resign 12 days later following a vote of no-confidence in Parliament. Later terms in office saw more success, notably in foreign affairs. His was appointed president of the U.N. General Assembly in 1965 and worked to improve relations between East and West, including proposing that Mao Tse-Tung's China would be admitted into the United Nations and pushing for peace in Vietnam. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
