GOP Urges Protest Vs. TV Anchors

By David Bauder

NEW YORK The Republican National Committee has given out the
telephone numbers of Tom Brokaw, Peter Jennings and Dan Rather,
urging Republicans to call the network anchors to protest
coverage of a Democratic fund-raising trial.

Committee Chairman Jim Nicholson was miffed that the evening news
programs didn't devote more time to last Thursday's conviction of
Vice President Gore's former fund-raiser for arranging illegal
contributions to Democrats during the 1996 campaign.

Maria Hsia was convicted of five felony counts for arranging more
than $100,000 in illegal contributions.

"I think it's neglect," Nicholson said Monday. "If she had been a
Republican operative who had brought money to a Republican
candidate, there would have been an absolute uproar in the media
and there should have been in this case."

Network representatives say such organized protests are common.
What made Nicholson's directive unusual was that it included the
office phone numbers of the anchors and their bosses and, in some
cases, their e-mail addresses.

His call to arms was sent out via e-mail to about 10,000 GOP
activists and radio talk show hosts across the country.

By late Monday afternoon, CBS reported "a handful" of phone calls
and ABC said it had received a few dozen. NBC received less than
15 calls, spokeswoman Barbara Levin said.

"It's politics," said ABC spokeswoman Eileen Murphy.

Nicholson said that the "CBS Evening News" devoted 23 seconds to
the story Thursday evening, while ABC's "World News Tonight"
logged 19 seconds. NBC's "Nightly News" did not mention the
story, he said.

ABC has reported extensively on the fundraising scandal since it
was first uncovered, Murphy said. To measure its commitment by
the number of seconds broadcast on Thursday is silly, she said.

"We don't feel like we have anything to apologize for," she said.

The phone calls may have taken Brokaw by surprise; he was on
vacation last Thursday and Brian Williams filled in on NBC's
nightly news.

"As any independent news organization has found, organized
campaigns like this do occur periodically and we understand
that," Levin said. "We make editorial decisions in our newsroom
every day and we stand by them."

Jennings, Brokaw, and jck were returned. I then re-sent the
bounced messages as eg:

to each of the returned addies. In every one case of the three
different domains, at least one message did not bounce. I had
practiced this by fighting spammers; it does work. Boomerang
