Om K ---- The decoration of the exterior of the Quadrangle, unlike that in the seven courts, touches but seldom on the intimate affairs of our college life. The curious, however, searching the upper reaches of the Elm Street facade, will see certain symbols carved upon the stones, just above the upper windows of the oblong bays. They are the emblems of the three Senior Societies in Yale College, once familiar enough to the eyes of the campus world, when the members of these organizations displayed the golden tokens of their allegiance on their neckties, but now seldom seen. A veil of silence, never quite understood and hardly explicable, hangs over the life and the power of these strange institutions. Some day, perhaps, when our undergraduate life has entirely altered, and the Senior Societies have gone the way of Linonia, of Brothers in Unity, and Calliope, some antiquarian will spread the story of their ways before the world, as a singular chapter in the annals of Yale. For the present, the visitor who is a stranger to our ways will find that his queries meet with baffling evasions and vague uncertainties. There these symbols are, overlooking the passing crowd, as the institutions for which they stand have overlooked the life of Yale for the better part of a century, affecting it and guiding it in ways that are hard to understand; but just what these institutions are, or how they have gathered their power, are matters that lie behind a cloud of mystery. While the societies stand, the visitor will find no Yale man who is ready to answer his questions about them; and no man who has not lived through his four years at Yale can form even the vaguest notion of what these things may be. pps. 421-422 ----- Aloha, He'Ping, Om, Shalom, Salaam.
